More Blueys from the Swan

On Monday and Tuesday this week I went out to Blackwall reach for some crabs as I heard the pt walter spots werent firing.  Monday morning was a late start getting on the water around 9 and with the howling westerlie Blackwall reach was a glassoff. I had promised to take a colombian friend from tafe out for crabs but diving off GI. But with the wind the way it was I said we should pot the river.  Juan didnt have his licence so we set our sights on 10 crabs and were soon underway. A couple of pulls of the string and it was getting hot so I showed him the path up the cliff and we jumped off the cliff.

With 10 in the esky and a cold beer in hand around 2pm we were pulling all the pots in and got another 3 which went back with me promising to come get them on tuesday.  A bit of a cook up back at home and Juan was on his way with some cooked crabs for his missus. He had never seen, caught or tasted a crab before.

I also had offered to take a family friend out for a crack so we went out at 5:30, on the water for 6:15.  I told Ray it was going to be a beautiful day as we went around pt walter flat out.  Pots into the water and there was another boat in the bay who were already on 4 when we started.  Ray had his licence so we set the target a bit higher and ended up with 15 by lunchtime.  Back home for another cook up and Ray and I had a huge feed out the back on the table with newspaper for a tablecloth, bread, vinegar, salt + pepper and a fan to keep us cool. Plus a few coopers pale ales to rehydrate.

28 in two days. Not as quick as 20 in two hours but relaxing days anyway. Biggest was 18.5 cm across the shell. Only two undersize and two tiny females in the two days.

But I fish 10-14.5 cause my ropes arent long enough. We were using fish heads from previous trips but the other boat cleaned up using chicken necks and wings? I reckon lamb necks, chicken necks, wings, spleen or fish heads are all good options.

I have had most of my success

Wed, 2011-02-09 09:46

I have had most of my success with chicken wings and fresh fish. Helps if you pour a bit of fish oil over them as well ;)

Over the last month, through about 50 crabs, only last night did I get my first female (full of eggs) and my first undersized crab which is great signs for the Swan!

Licence

Wed, 2011-02-09 12:23

You need a Recreational Boat Fishing Licence to catch crabs from a boat... Not needed if you're fishing from the Land...

man ive struggled to get crabs in the swan this year, with only a few coming over the side.

Must be in the wrong areas looking at the numbers people are getting!

Nice haul mate.

Yeah I got on to a few last

Fri, 2011-02-11 08:44

Yeah I got on to a few last night around Pt Walter

Only had 4 nets and pulled them 3 times each, ended up with 4 sized crabs, one to 175mm.

Would have liked to have longer but the weather started turning windy as all hell

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

well done bryan,

we were out last sat night when it was blowing its ass off and was nice a calm in blackwall reach, still managed 8 straight off the back of the boat while mored up.

there must be lots of crabs still in the swan as there are guys crabbing from the farmer frwy all the way up to freo, i reckon i passed about 20 boats along the way.

well done mate, bring on the prawns...mmmmmm

Mon, 2011-02-14 11:48

went out saturday morning and got 7. Bloody Trinity Regatta was on and then we went to antoher spot and they had a massive sailing competition on. Boats going through pots, tipping over, not to mention a bloody rude bunch of pr***s who said if we didnt pull our pots he would cut them. And then he moved away 5 mins later. Was a nightmare, especially when we were getting crabs at that time too!

Fri, 2011-02-25 10:53

been out the last 2 nights and only got 2 each night trying about 3 different spots each time. Do they start to leave the river this time of year? Do they head back out to the ocean?

I have never dropped nets for

Sat, 2011-03-12 20:25

I have never dropped nets for crabs but I'd like to give it a shot. Is there any restriction on the amount of drop nets per license holder when fishing from a boat? How many nets is advisable and how long do you need to leave them down?

thanks

Dave

10 pots per boat

Sun, 2011-03-13 08:41

10 crabs per rfbl, 20 boat limit. You send them down for 20 mins or so at first and can pick up the pace if they are firing.
