I tend to struggle a little

I tend to struggle a little to get crabs too. Starting to think I need to get rid of the bait cages and just clip baits in. Also, I have the steel wire base nets, are they any better or worse than the ones with fibre netting?

I reckon its bait cages for certain locations

Tue, 2011-03-08 07:16

Naked for others.  Depends what your baits are and what kind of picker you are dealing with.  If say over on Garden Island on the south eastern section, just outside the exclusion zone for the officers mess and to the bays north: the trumpeters are a bloody nuisance and can swarm so hard on a bait a crab wont even go near it. If not in a cage the bait probably wont stand a chance.

In the river: Blowies can be a problem, but using large hardy baits like fish heads it doesnt seem to matter. Using lamb necks can be good, but the blowies eat the meat off and you are left with the neck bone = no crabs.  Cages would be the go.  Spleen can also get a belting.

Cammos, do you like diving for them? I am going on wed night in the river if you would like to come along.  Few prawns about also, still havent seen a huge one, but enough around for a feed.

Yeah, I have dived for them a couple times. Not a massive fan of the river, let alone at night. I tend to net for crabs more as a family activity but catching nothing sure does get the kids mighty bored mighty quick.

I will have to try some other baits. The first couple times we went we bagged out in under an hour and was told that was normal, so maybe my expectations are a bit high.

We went out in Mandurah on

Tue, 2011-03-08 09:47

We went out in Mandurah on the weekend and you don't stand a chance just using just clips there because of the blowies.  We got 14 in about 2 1/2  hours but we were using old baits.  Still lots of undersized ones - about 3 small ones to every sized one I reckon.  We use some baskets and some plastic pockets and some powder coated metal pockets (you know those red type ones).  They all do the job the same.  I think we would have done better if we were using fresher baits though.  As for the different nets, I'm still undecided on which ones are better.  We use a mix of mesh wire bottom and netting bottom nets and they both seem quite even in terms of catch rates so I don't think it really matters?

As for secret spots, I don't think it hurts to tell people what sort of area you were in.  We were in the estuary.  Seriously though, you can get them anywhere down there but we went near Boggy Bay and just kept moving around.

I have a mixture of pots.

Tue, 2011-03-08 15:06

I have a mixture of pots. Ones with clips and ones with bait holders. I find they both get crabs but probably more often with the clips rather than boait holders, but u have to be prepared to lose your baits. The best bait i have found by a long way (and ive tried them all - spleen, mullet, fresh fish heads, mulies) is chicken. usually wings or even drumsticks. They went off the bite mid last week. Maybe cos of breeding, but this week they have been back on. Got 15 in 3 hours the other night. big ones too! Shells were a bit dirtier but so maybe something to do with breeding or moons? I thought they were gone for the season!

yeh get rid of the cages and clips in the swan, go down to ur butcher and get a box of chiken frames and put a whole one in ur net with a cable tie arround it.

you will need large nets for this but ur better off with bigger nets in the swan so the large crabs dont flip out the top of them

good luck
