Morning Pilbara Jig

Sean8 and i went out for a fish this morning, the plan was to head out "real wide" to some new ground however the weather gods did not let that happen. We opted for a jig / fish on some familiar ground a lot closer to shore. I used nothing but jigs while sean used bait. Unfortunately the demersals were not playing the game and seans bait remained largley untouched. Alas it was going orfffff on jigs, just one problem, i couldnt land any of the fish i was hooking. There were large numbers of BIG spanyids around resulting in around 10 lost jigs for me, ahhhhhhhhh

all good i did manage to land quite a few mack tuna, gold spots, cod and a snall mackie.

I am afraid i also lost the traveling lure to a large mackie, sorry guys.... I hooked something BIG as well which again i didnt manage to land. Every time i managed to get it up off the bottom a few meters it would bury me again, i am guessing it was a huge cod of some sorts.

Attached a couple of photos of some of the landed species

Jigs sure won the day over baits

Not far from the truth mate, the only action I had was behind the lens, except for a few small snapper.

Sounds like a fun but expensive session. I'm hoping you are making heaps of coin up there.

Great to see my old rod getting a nice workout and good to see you getting into some jigging bro... too bad about the macks, they really hate the wire and it's just pot luck to land them on mono.

I'm not sure whether the unstoppables were cod, Glenn landed some MASSIVE cod on PE4 last time we were out and they weren't too much of a handful... in my experience generally the BIG gold spot trevs are the regular culprits that bury you off Dampier.

PS...
Every time I've seen jigs fished side-by-side bait, jigs ALWAYS win :)

yep, this is going to be another expensive habit....I'm sure the missus is stoked!

Yeah, not sure about the gold spot thoery mate, i did land quite a few but the BIG unstopable fought totally different, unless it was a 40 kg gold spot. You could just tell what ever it was it was HUGE, massive amount of power even with a straight rod and a holding the spool.. anyway i guess we will never know.

on second thughts it could have even been something like a HUGE GT, not sure

yeah that's right, will never know... keeps you going back. There's certainly some monster fish off Dampier and I've been buried by plenty of them.

Sun, 2010-01-03 09:35

hey bro,

is it possible to crimp a longer piece of wire so its parallel to the mono, but a touch longer so the mono still does all the jigging?

possibly, but i dont think

Sun, 2010-01-03 12:13

possibly, but i dont think it is the jig style that comes with a bit leader that stops them striking, i just think they can see the wire and they get a bit suss thats all. Most of the strikes come on the drop so they are hitting the top end of the jig and geting the mono then

Frankly, I hate macks - it just comes down to a case of pure luck on where they hit the jig. The only thing worse is when they school up and steal all your poppers. In this case, one of them learnt a lesson:

Agreed, I think they'll always be a nuisance whenever jigging up north.

I'm not so sure about jigs

Sun, 2010-01-03 14:53

I'm not so sure about jigs but there are some good buys to be had now on poppers with the strong AUD/weak USD, and the splitting of a certain proshop in the states.
