Mullas down deep, what rigs?
Submitted by dkonig82 on Sat, 2012-11-24 19:20
Going to have a crack at some mulloway at some deep marks I have.
Jigs will be the first attempt, but failing that will probably resort to some dirty bait. If I were to send down a tailor fillet, what are people's thoughts on a paternoster with a snelled set of 3 to hold the fillet? Or any other suggestions?
Am a newbie to chasing these things and pretty keen for some success this week so any tips appreciated!
Dan

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

I'm not a boatie so I could be way off base with this but I don't think a tailor fillet will hold up for very long on a deep drop. I think you would be better off if you can catch some scalies or squid to use live or at least get some fresh squid from a fish monger. Yellowtail, herring & whiting are other excellent live bait choices that should be fairly easy for you to catch. My understanding is that live isn't so critical for deep mullas but I'm certain it will stand up to the drop & pickers far better than a fillet bait will.
If you do go a fillet then a paternoster with 2 hooks should be sufficient, the same rig will do well for squid either live or dead. If you go the live bait option then a single 6/0-10/0 circle hook on the paternoster would seem like a reasonable option to me. Like I said though, I'm not a boatie so I could be way off the mark with both the baits & the rigs.

I would have thought your idea is fine Dan.
The guys over east, are using gang hooks on paternoster rigs, which I've never done, but seems like a good idea.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

mulla
Dan,
Mulla on jigs is doable but you have to work hard for em. As for running baits, Ryan used to get live whitting from Rotto and target mulla on live bait with great success but through winter more so.
His rig, patternoster with two droppers, 120lb Jinka plus trace line, Mako three way tri-crane swivels and a 7/0 Extreme circle hook which you pin to the mouth of your live bait.
