been trying hardcore and none, everything had been perfect for them over the last few days an not a single run or bite.. i tried narrows, canning river and around mosmans!
water is cold atm, and i think it might be putting them off their game, was at old traffic bridge in freo on fri 2 months ago, lost 7 fish, almost got spooled by something big, and next night nothing. So i think its just all the little things that matter, presentation time tide, moon, sunlight %, cload cover rain fresh water %. But then again maybe not.
A couple of mates who only land base fish (no sea legs) have been catching them at the Rockingham YC jetty as well as the good old Ammo jetty and one the other night at south beach rock wall
put in the time and reap the rewards. Was told by an old salt you need to put in 40 hrs before you will get your first decent Mulloway
Don't hope on 40hrs til u get a good fish , I know guys that have got a 20kg+ fish on there 1st night and 2nd cast, and I know people (myself + my dad included ) who have taken more fish then anyone we know from the ocean of all sizes but when we started fishing in the swan river for them with fly rods, we didn't even see a fish for the first 150+hrs yet alone hook or land 1. But once you put the time in and work out key, you wil get more then what you could ever wish for!! thats providing you work out the key factors to getting them. I know a few guys that put the hours in but never paid attention to the details and have never got one.
I've lost track of the amount of hours I have put in, and i've only had one run - and that was about a month ago. At least 200 hours, possibly even double that. Just gotta keep persisting. As Jarrad says, work around the perfect conditions and your chances will increase tenfold. I've done maybe 15 hours tops this 'season' so far, buty have been paying attention to the factors moreso.
I've seen them caught day time, night time, low tide and high tide and on different moons. I know this doesn't really help. But when me and my friend were chasing them, we ended up going out for a day because we were bored(usually we fished nights and followed the moon and tide). Then he landed he's first Mulloway at around 1pm in the arvo
being at a younger age, The narrows was about the best spot I was able to fish, most saturday nights, in not ideal conditions. I've been there when they have been caught, Just never got one myself.
I land base fish for mulloway south of the metro area. Heading out tonight for a bash . Havnt seen a mulloway since september. Caught 6 that night. Total for the year for me is 26 fish. All fish were over 12kg with the biggest 20kg. Had a good run in april this year when I caught mulloway on 6 consecutive nights. I release all my mulloway alive and most of my fishing buddies do also. It is a great way to keep a location quiet from other fishers .
Mulloway come and go , travelling distances in search of food. The trick is finding where they will show up next. My last 5 trips have yielded nil. Bait fish in the area is a good start. Dusk till 11.30pm seems to work for me.
Main thing to remember is you need a lot of patients! If you're not using the right rig or the right bait, your chances will be very slim.
I recommend using 5/0 or 6/0 hooks. Using a snapper rig ( Best to make your own for a heavier leader ) I use 80 pound mono. Live bait or dead bait, just make sure it's fresh.
I never really fished the river for mulloway, i prefer the ocean as quite often tailor ar sharks are the by-catch, drive a hour or so north of perth and look for gutters, burley the shit out of the water, fresh baby squid on a surf rig with running sinker. This method has worked for me a few times recently, however im still after that 20kg trophy fish! Stay tuned!

Caught 4 between 55-70 cm yesterday morning, lost one at the edge about 7ks's
This has been the best year for them in ages, seen more pics of mullas taken this year than any year in the last 10
Conditions perfect at the moment. If you have put in 200 hours and havent caught one Leemo your not fishing in the right spots.
Cheers Russ

WOULD YOU EAT IT ?
GOOD FRESH BAIT IS THE KEY....
LIVE SLIMEY MACKEREL IS MY PREFERRED BAIT...
IF YOU WOULDN'T EAT IT NEITHER WILL THEY.....
(unless it's suicidal or sick)
AS FOR BIG MULLAS . . . . HIT THE E-SHED . . . . . ONLY BIG ONES THERE....... EASY FISHIN TOO....
LOOK FOR SCHOOLS OF BAITFISH IN THE WATER . . . . . NO BAITFISH = NO BIG FISH
TOP OR BOTTOM OF TIDE - DOESN'T MATTER WHAT TIME -
STILL KILLING INNOCENT ANIMALS FOR FUN
