Mulloway ?

Saw a fish ~1m long in a metro spot just sitting under my mates tinny in about 8m of water, and instantly I rigged a single hook maybe 5/0 or 6/0 with a running bean sinker and loaded it with a live yellowtail. Hurled it in, fish instantly does a U turn and gently takes off with the bait. Ran for about 30 seconds, then rejecting the bait and spitting it back out, alive. We reckon Mulloway, because of the silhouetted visual we got, but upon thinking we wonder what else it could be ?

Also, when livebaiting, what do you prefer to use for mulloway and other fish like that ? I used a single hook and a sinker because it was what was there, spur of the moment type scenario but I'm trying to work out the best way to have this prepped for next time. Cheers.

Sambo

Depending on where it was I'd say sambo.. Mulloway do drop baits but normally they are dead and have pin teeth marks on them.. Sambos on the other hand I've had hit and drop baits several times and the bait is still alive..

Just my thoughts hope it helps..

This was perhaps 600 - 700m from the shore.

Patience

geez mate you have more patience than me.

Ran for 30secs? I would have driven that hook home like a bastard

If live baiting for Mulloway have the hook (6/0 or 7/0 non circle) lightly pinned above the lateral line in the front 1/3 of the baitfish.

Mulloway and also Pinks generally attack baitfish head first so avoid having the hook in the rear of the bait.
