Mulloway bait?

Planning to have a crack on some chunky structure around 80m to try and lure out a Mulloway.

Going to try jigs first, but failing that what's the preferred bait which is readily purchasable?

I know live tailor etc are often used off the shore, but I don't have the inclination to go and try find them as this is not a dedicated Mulla trip, just going to try quickly whilst out jigging. Was thinking maybe scalies?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

Dan

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Herring are number 1 in my list of mulloway baits, followed by tailor, scalies & yellowtail. All live, forget dead baits & especially forget frozen dead baits. Herring, scalies & yellowtail are easy enough to get live in numbers.

offshore mulloway

Fri, 2012-11-16 10:46

in my experience the offshore (deep water 60-120m) mulloway are not too fussy , i have caught them on fillets , californian squid, occy etc , if they are there you shouldn't have too much trouble getting them to take a bait.

cheers

Yeah no livewell on the boat

Yeah no livewell on the boat makes things hard.

I'll try and hit a fish monger the day before and get some fresh stuff, but never really know if it is actually that fresh. Should at least be able to jig a skippy and use a slab of that I guess.

out deeper i dont think they are too fussy, but the better baits to try are tailor fillets, half tailor (might attract sharks, herring, scalies, yellow tail, even some fresh snook/pike works well.

i'd try jigs though and go with a pilchard blue color! in that depth or some soft plastics on elevators.

problem with mulies and at that depth is they dont last.. pickers or simply comes off on the way down. other baits like herring, yellow tail, tailor and scalies will at least have half a chance.

Don't get me wrong mulies are good for the shallow stuff and land based just IMO i wouldn't use them out in that depth

Cheers guys

Scalies seem pretty reliable for most other things, might grab some of them and some fresh tailor from a fish monger before I go
