My first bream on a lure

I had always tried using lures for bream upstream where it's dirty but I've had no luck. Closest I came to catching one on a lure upstream was hooking onto a bream but then losing it when the hooks pulled.

Went fishing downstream with my cousin to target bream on lures which I haven't done before and my cousin gets a hookup using a sebile flat shad 35. Hooks dropped, we were both disappointed because it would have been his first too. He hooked up another and this was big, I'm talking 40cm but as we got it close to shore, once again the hooks pulled. Few minutes later, he hooks another! They were definately feeding and this time, he actually managed to land it and so he finally caught his first bream on a lure.

So I thought I'd put on my tt switchblade and give that a go. A few minutes later, the lure gets smashed and I'm on to a bream. I managed to land it too .:)

Here's the pic.

Always great getting the target species on a lure.

Notice you're using a clip, for lures this size it may be worth trying just a loop knot as you could be spooking fish with the clip.  Mind you, I don't do much breaming but this works for me on other species.  This fish obviously wasn't spooked!

Hi Broady,

I think for TT Switchblade of this size, it comes standard attached with a snap/clip. In my opinion if you are using light leader of 6lb -8lb, it is better to tie on to the clip then through the holes on the blade. Rough edges of the holes on the blade will wear through light leader easily.

But for tiny hardbodies & minnow meant for bream etc, I certainly agree with tying straight onto the lure as even the tiniest snap will sandbag the lure.

Mayfly,

Congratulations on first bream on lure. Once you crack your first, the rest will come easy.

Cheers

I would say that tying to the snap is much the same as tying to the lure loop. If ya using a loop knot to the lure it will have the same affect as the snap without the ugly snap there bream can be extreamely fussy at times ( obviously  not that time mayfly as you had a crackin session by the sounds of it) and something like that snap can mean the difference between catching a 40 or spooking a 40, test it out try 20 casts with the snap on, then try 20 with out see if there is a difference. Great way to open the account with hard bodies tho onwards and upwards

Yeah I was contemplating

Yeah I was contemplating taking off the snap and using a loop knot but decided to leave it on there. I was only using 4lb leader so it may have worn through as uluabuster said but I didn't know this at the time.

But I also did forget to mention I (almost) caught a small whiting on that blade in the same session but it was only small and it came off as I got it out of the water (I need a landing net lol).

True those whiting are pretty savage hey, imo 4lb for hard bodies is a little too light just for the fact of when a bream hits a hard body the shock of that hit will pop 4lb straight away, for soft plastics i use no more than 4lb because the bite is a little more timid 6lb or 8lb for hards with a loop cant go wrong.

Sounds like your not setting

Sounds like your not setting your drag properly when fishing 4lb. I've been fishing hards on 4lb leader exclusively for bream for years & NEVER popped the leader.

Congrats on your bream Mayfly.

Fair call, All well and good

Fair call, All well and good if ya fishing open flats and you have room to let the fish run, even on the flats ive had 40s launch out of the water and just the force of the fish hitting the water pops leaders, each to their own i guess. I dont make enough money to rely on 4lb to keep my 20bucks safe.

I don't fish just fish the flats Rob, that's 4lb in the snags to. I read some years ago about people fishing very light drag settings in the snags with the idea being that it didn't panic the fish as much & they could just be gently coaxed out & to the net. It took some experimenting on my behalf but I gave it a go & it works pretty well. Sure I lose a few lures every now & again but not really that many more than I did when I was running 8 & 10lb leaders. Like you say, each to their own, I know what I do isn't everyones cup of tea. If your happy with the way your doing things & your getting fish is all that matters.

nicely done mate, soon youll be hooked on lures and plastics, that way you only end up with fishy oily stinky hands when you actually catch a fish...instead of baiting a hook
