My first ever GT!!

Just got back from an awesome week fishing and diving at the Montebello Islands! Will do up a full report with pics and some vids later but thought I would just quickly share a quick pic of my first ever GT as it was a pretty special catch for me!

I spent days throwing big poppers around on the heavy gear till my arms felt like they where going to drop off hoping for a big GT. Got a few good follows and one good hookup that was quickly reefed and lost. A couple of the other guys got onto some smaller model GT's but despite putting in the effort it just didn't look like it was gonna be my time...

We headed back to the anchorage and decided to put out a little bait on some lighter gear to grab a spango or trout for dinner before the sun went down. We used a small circle hook with a little strip of bonito on a Stradic 8k on a Terez rod.

Suddenly the rod buckled over and line started screaming off the reel, I picked it up and held on! Initial calls where shark or some sort of big cod / grouper as I could feel big tail thumps through the rod and was barely able to slow it down. Whatever it was, I knew I was definitely a bit under gunned on the lighter gear!

After a solid half hour of climbing and scrambling all over the boat doing my best to keep it out of the reef and away from the anchor rope we finally got some colour and up came a big G! We couldnt believe it!!

Snapped a couple of quick pics and sent him back just as the sun was setting. Couldn't have scripted it better!!

Was an amazing trip, stay tuned for full report soon!! :)

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Nice capture.

Isn't that just the way it goes, can't buy one all week so you stop trying and then they start jumping onto your hooks!

looking forward to the report.

Cheers,

D80
