my first size dhufish

After completing my boatsmart course last week it was finaly my time to take the boat out without my normal skipper, Hillaries was my target and the 3 mile i thought would be a good place to start. After 3 hrs without any luck i decided to head out alittle wider. My first drop at new location approx 4mile out i got what i wanted it wasnt huge but for my first time skippering a boat, finding new ground and finaly some fish i thouht was great. Anyway i managed my first (ever) dhuie from this spot and it was size (54cm). I then hooked 2 more im sure where dhuies but tried to pass on the rod so i could film the catch (Had 2 sexy ladies on board). But both were lost during the fight as they are relativly new to fishing).

Well done mate! I know the feeling of catching your first sized dhuie when your the skipper. Unfortunately for me it was the only fish my boat has seen for the last year and a half :(

Looks like a pretty magic day out on the water thou.. Even the girls are into the action, great stuff! Were you just working cray pot ground or was this a spot you knew about?

Hey Adam, The first half a day i tried a couple of our known Skippy spots to try and let the girls have some fun but after no luck yes i did spot some pots further out and decided it was worth a try before heading home. Had 1 person on board that was a little sea sick and not to sure they liked my decision to head out wider. However was a good choice. Was a lovely day on the water and looking forward to many more dhuies to come :)

Caught this pretty fish which i am unsure what it was any ideas? fish was released

whats is this fish?

Looks like it might be a blue goatfish but hard to tell from that angle.

They are called Southern Blue Devils and have awesome white pulpy flesh.  Can't say i've tried eating one, but we had one that wouldn't release and filleted it up which wen't back down as dhuie bait.  Certainly looked like it would have been worth while tasting thou, not sure if theres a size limit or anything that goes with them thou.
