My New Old Boat

 Hi Guys

Just thought id throw up some pictures and the story of my new boat, its my second boat with the first one being a 17ft - 2007 Revival Cuddy Cab with a 115 Mercury 2 stroke, Great boat for all purposes but due to a new house build and a few unexpected variations had to sell and down size in budget, wasn’t too keen on using a boat yard but in the end was contacted by Joondalup Boat shack, done a quick search on here...seen good reports so gave Rod a go. Very straight forward guy with excellent custom service, I was happy with the sale.

So after sorting a new budget with the fun police I spent the next four months searching for a new boat, $10,000 - $12,000 made life hard after having a boat in excellent condition with all the extras, was looking at Baron, Pacemaker & Swift Craft when they popped up in that price range around the same size. After scrolling past this one several times decided to take a look as it was a bit cheaper and bigger, now iv done a little reading but by no means know a lot about fiber glass or out board motors, I guess after looking at 10 to 20 boats in a Variety of conditions in the last 4 months I started to get a feel for what’s got issues and whats got issues.

So after no sea trial or compression check I bought it, don’t know how these hulls handle or review. The owner and his son came across very straight and being keen fisho's with a new model along side I had faith it had been looked after...plus they stated it had been in the family for the last 3 decades with the motor being on the boat for the last 4 years, this was purchased from a forum member so after a PM I was confident it had had been in reasonable care. Don’t know the year of the hull but would guess late 70's early 80's..It’s a 19 ft Guardian with a 1995 2 stroke 115 Johnson on board with 90lts of fuel capacity, trailer is 1979. Little more deck space than me old one, with a cabin like my last but this time with a hard top. Beside some gel coat cracking and a little peeling in the cabin area everything seemed solid with no major visible repairs or replacements. Straight up it needed money spent on safety gear to get on the water but I took that into consideration.

Once home I stripped the carpet and inside cabin to have a good look over and clean.

First up i replaced the cabin cushions through foam sales in Myaree, Simon was great giving excellent service and price, this was the wife’s request to keep the kids happy during the Sunday arvo river cruise’s, cabin ply was given a quick sand and a coat of clear vanish. After that and budget in mind I had to keep the lowrance Elite 5 and radio that came separate, but installed a new Furuno 587 fish finder with a 600W tranny to get me on my way. Epird, Jackets, Flares and bilge pump were purchase. Fitted these and checked nav lights etc for working order.

The motor hadn’t had a service for a while and giving its age and the fact I like to get out past the 50’s I thought id give it a once over myself, spark plugs were looking a little average so they got replaced, water pump, thermos and fuel filter also got changed out. The water pump was first, dropping the leg and doing the change out did have me worried, after searching online for parts was glad I went through Chivers, very little price difference with this gear plus the service and advice was so much appreciated, with the manual and most stuff online now days I got it sorted after a few nervous moments, looking back it wasn’t to difficult and am glad I’ve done it.

Was going to give the thermos a miss, but again after speaking to the guys at Chivers, a hundred plus dollars was a small price to pay especially if intending to head out a few miles. Getting these out was the most time consuming thing ever!! Until re fitting the new ones came around. My model on paper shows to be the worse of all models with 2 sets of hands required, so glad I did these though as they were almost non existence. I always thought outboard motors were expensive to service after the first boat, even with experience I believe outboards would have to be one of the most time consuming thing’s I’ve ever worked on.

Well that’s it so far, the motors running sweat, still looking forward to the first run on the water to clean the carbon out…hope it floats!! Still plenty to do, a good cut en polish wouldn’t hurt but I’m not worried about appearance atm, trailer breaks also need a refit so transits require care. If I do like it more than I think ill give spending big dollar’s on a new tub a miss and give this hull a true refit next winter. Not sure if ive done the right thing here, but was super keen to get back on the water. I have faith in these older builds and this worked out well under budget.

Thanks for reading, any comments appreciated.

Brock

Thanks for the great post. The boat is looking really good and I'm sure you will spend a great many hours enjoying a quiet cruise up the river or a trip out wide, and the thing is you will be confident of what's under your feet because you have had it back to the bare bones and know what's what.
Have some great times Brock, see you on the water

great write up Brock, get some water pics up!

The picture of the water impellor is a classic demo, of what happens to the rubber with lack of use.

It doesnt look to have ANY wear on the vanes but is well and truly knackered from having the blades sitting in one place without running for a long period.

Nothing overboard, won't have to stress so much about snapper sinkers, dive gear and spear guns etc. your right Rob, first thoughts were the impeller was ok until trying to fit the new one, a lot of difference in the rubber.

Still plenty to do, hook up a radio! Leg oil looked clean and green which was good, really need to get the propella off for a grease but don't think it will come to easy.

fingers crossed Wednesday it might get its first work out, see how I go with an electric winch for the first time plus a little extra weight and size, after that hopefully some fish.

Good stuff Brock!

Looks like a nice dry boat with a big bow. Should handle the ruff stuff nicely.

Good donk that one ;)

Did some serious hours with that motor brocko, rarely let me down!

The only time it failed me was when I was heading out for a spot of squidding, and the VRO (fuel/oil) pump died, setting off the alarm. If it hadve failed the day before, I would've been stranded out past the fads, around the 350m contour!

as mentioned before, it was well looked after and serviced periodically. It would surprise me if it doesn't do another 600 hours +!!

If the VRO pump fails, just

If the VRO pump fails, just chuck the oil in the fuel like any other 2 stroke provided the ratio is roughly right!

If the VRO fails

Mon, 2014-07-28 05:40

You also have to manually pump fuel into the engine as well, Not just premix the fuel.

Not it as easy as you think.

Just have to get the decky

Mon, 2014-07-28 07:38

Just have to get the decky there squeezin on the bulb I guess to get home

But normally the oil pump is a seperate pump in the 2 strokes and can be just premixed as Brock mentions below

Those pulse fed VRO'S

Need to be retrofitted with a diaphram pump from an older Johnno for it to work like that, as Scotto said its a bit of a muck around to do.

Good job on the tidy up and motor repairs. Great to see people share these type of threads .

I couldn't help notice the PVC rod holders , did you remove these ? I dont think i would trust them with an expensive rod and reel stored like that.

There's no way of ever knowing the true history of a motor without a full log and even that can be screwed in my book. Just the fact your self and the previous owners are passionate fish'os gave me confidence it had been flushed and serviced to some extent. After changing the plugs and a fresh tank of 98 it started and idialed strong even cold, I'm not sure of the hours ATM but am happy with it. Although the thermos we're done the internals were clean with no signs of corrosion.

I always carry spare 2 stroke, in the case of the vro alarm next time, the manual states to pre mix the tank to get back safe which is always in the back of your mine traveling deep.

Grant, they were one of the first bits and pieces removed, the poly at the back is an extension for the bait board to give it height and remove from the deck area, ill trial this when using bait next but will look to another method. Thats part of the cons of the older boats! Build in rod holders, under deck storage, live tank and fuel which will be missed. I have a good ice box but good rod holders will be the next add on for sure.

Fingers crossed for decent wind Wednesday..

If you need

Sun, 2014-07-27 23:15

If you need something custom made send me a PM.  I have seen this problem a few times with bait boards, were they take up room on deck or get in there way of the motor when it tilts up . On my rebuild it was one thing i took time to get right, making sure it is usable but out of the way to walk around the deck.

Nice work will be great to see a report on how it all works out for you .

I had a  Guardian a few years

Mon, 2014-07-28 09:15

I had a  Guardian a few years back ... not sure if yours is the same , but it had no anchor well / hatch and it was always 50/50 whether the deckie would make it back if the swell was up lol ..

My present tub has the full length hardtop as well , soon learnt to appreciate that on a hot summers day .. I see your barwork is angled back so you may not have to learn the hand to hand rod switcharoo around the bars like I did  .. just have to cast sideways when need be .. I ended up bolting and reinforcing a couple of prefabbed SS rocket launchers on the back .

A little tip would be to buy some dark tint off ebay and put it on the lower windows ..

Now you have the motor sorted , all the other cosmetic stuff can be done in between fishing trips .. congrats and well done

I'll keep the offer in mind, still to assess what's going to work best.

Chris mines the same, no anchore hatch which is another con, I thought about connecting the rope and keeping it inboard with a tag line for removal as I do like early snapper fishing in average conditions and mostly are solo! The fact you can walk around is a pro in my book but this will be for good days only.

The hard top I like but does finish at forehead level for me! Hopefully I don't have too many mad sessions I'll end up on me ass! If I decide to keep it I was thinking of re - gel coating it one day which would see that raised at the same time. Seated its ok. Rocket launcher and dark tint are on the to do list.
