Need to repower 21foot fraser

Here we go again guys...

ETEC or 4 stroke??

I went through this forum to research answers before asking... Ive come to conclusion that, anything less than 150hp I should go etec... anything over go with 4 stroke....unfortunately 150hp is exact size motor Ill be chasing for the 21 foot fraser hull... 1986 model..

I dont need to go flat out... just cruising out around the islands and the shoals fishing with the odd trip down to Dirk Hartog.. (I live in Carnarvon)..

Mainly want a reliable, starts first go every time outboard, BUT... I dont want a thirsty outboard... Looking to save as much on fuel as I can..

Being an 86 model half cab fraser, it probably weighs abit...

Any educated ideas on what I should go?

I dont want the .. I heard a guy that had a .... type story...  I cant afford to buy something thats not up to scratch..

Well i don't own one , but i have mates with suzuki's  ( 140s + 250s) and they are pushing some serious weight  and have never missed a beat and very good on fuel. One has 1000hrs + and still going strong, also nice and quiet. If you don't need the holeshot speed then i would get a 4/stroke but thats just my thoughts really!

Craig

Pay Craig a visit and see what he's got in stock at the moment. He's probably familiar with the boat and what you will need to repower it.

craigs marine

yeah spoke with Craig today and he rates e tec all the way..

He has an older 130hp in stock.... like a mid 90's johnson I think... but its 25inch and I need a 20inch leg...

He doesnt know the boat as Ive just bought it... its still in Perth..He also thinks it may be a bit small for a heavy 21 footer... and expensive on fuel..

Ill probably have to buy 2nd hand donk really as new ones are around 18k... a bit out of my range at the moment...unless I can sell my other boats first that are advertised on this site....eg.. whaler, chivers, poly dinghy!!!!  Any takers?  ;-)

Yep, your mate Graigs right. l went down the 150 Etec path on a heavy glass tub and it pushed it fine to 36 knots and it jumped out of the hole but it was heavy on fuel and oil.

Go four stroke.2 Stroke oil

Wed, 2012-06-27 19:38

Go four stroke.2 Stroke oil is expensive.Dont under power your craft. If you think you need a 150,Id go 175.It has nothing to do with top speed but you will find a engine that is doing the same work a little easier, even if it is a bigger displacement will be better on fuel.If you go to small, to bad your stuck with it.I have repowered my 22ft swiftcraft with a 225 honda and I get 1nm per 1L of fuel most of the time.I was told that a 150 would be all I need from several leading boatyards.Im glad i went bigger.Price is the other factor that may swing you one way or the other.I think most 150hp engines are 4cyl.After that they go to v6 which dont rev as hard and I think are quieter. This is only my opinion.

Mercruiser

Wed, 2012-06-27 19:51

Have you given a thought to sterndrive, a mate has a complete V8 mercruiser and leg sitting gathering dust in a workshop in town. It came out of a 22 ft Whitley cabin cruiser and the owner pulled it out and replaced it with a diesel when he purchased the boat, nothing wrong with it .

Wouldn't take too much to build the stern up and fit it in. Will prove cheaper to run than an outboard.

PM me if you want more info on it

stern drive

Thu, 2012-06-28 10:53

Nah not really interested in sterndrive as you lose too much deck space...

Craig did mention that MAYBE a 115hp E-TEC might be ok on her, IF we use a smaller prop, so its not working as hard...

What are your thoughts on that?

We may be able to source a 115 for a reasonable dollar figure..

buy the bigger horsepower

Thu, 2012-06-28 11:02

and buy a fourstroke! this way you can run on less revs and use less fuel! but still have that extra power if you fish till late and need to get home quick

 oersonally i feel you would

Thu, 2012-06-28 11:25

oersonally i feel you would be better going a bit bigger than the 150. you wont need as many revs to push the boat along as the 150 or smaller, in turn you will use less fuel as its not working as hard and if need be you will have power in reserve. maybe a 200 4 stroke, look around and you might pick up a bargain

A stern drive isnt such a bad idea tho, we had a 23 foot fraser around the same vintage and had a 350 chev in it. went along great and the engine cover can be utilised as seating or set up your bait board on top. if you can get the whole setup at the right price that is.

Etec dealers

Thu, 2012-06-28 19:33

If your keen on the etec try giving some dealers in Perth a call, some can source new etecs that are excess stock from previous years. The price comes down a heap and you still get the whole warrenty as it starts when the motor is fitted.Waterworld would be a good start.

Thu, 2012-07-12 13:35

Well guys here's the latest..

Boat didnt look to bad when picked her up on the weekend in Perth... Towed it up to Carnarvon.... 300kms per tank of diesel.... SHEEESH she's heavy....

Get up there and noticed the drain plug was blocked with crap... poked a stick into it, and she drained full noise for over an hour!!!!  GREAT!!!  not...

Wondering how long the water has been in there, we pulled up the floor to inspect.......

........ Anyone got somewhere in mind for a new FAD???????
