Need some reasurance!

Hey guys, I have been Demersal jigging outright for two years now, ( no bait on the boat ) have had a lot of ups and down with some amazing captures including 2 x 20kg dhuies in 2 drifts , best day ever, I seem to of had a bit of a dry spell of late with not a lot of fish being caught from our last few trips, yesterday I covered about 110 mile and fished nearly all my regular dhuie spots south of mandurah . Lots of them had really good signs of fish , better than normal but nothing biting, couldn't believe it. Starting to doubt myself and thinking I'm doing something wrong even though I'm still doing it the same way as I always have. First time in two years I thought to myself maybe I should take out one bait rod to improve my catch rate,I want to avoid this as I'm really enjoying just heading out with one light pe3 outfit and a wallet full of jigs but burning a lot of fuel and not putting any fish in the freezer is getting a bit frustrating. Let me quickly say that I don't fish to fill the freezer but a couple of nice fish every couple of trips makes it that much more rewarding, Anyone having the same issues or have discovered any new tips they want to share I would appreciate you letting me know

jigging is just a fad,

jigging is just a fad, nothing new and will be replaced by something else one day. Placcys are the same. Sure they catch fish of course but fishing is about catching fish and being prepared to try different things to get fish when no one else is catching them.
Do what you need to do to catch them I say. Having said that, if you can catch fish on artificials its much cleaner and easier. Why not tie a large fly up above your bait as well .... this definitely works!

Ahh that's what happens when you turn to the dark arts Dirt ;) I understand your frustration mate and I reckon sometimes they are just not on the chew. We drifted some incredible ground yesteday with some really good showings and not even a bite. The one's I got yesterday were on virtual nothing ground (hard coral). Just stick with it if that's what you want to do, your days will come again.

 Although not always correct

Sun, 2014-04-13 10:44

Although not always correct to the fishes mood, the almanac only gave yesterday a 1 star rating for Hungary fish. Since I have started paying more attention to it, my catch rate has increased. I am always cross referencing the weather with the almanac, now I really need to keep a diary of it, to really start cracking the codes! I to try not to use bait anymore, I have ups and downs but when I succeed, it is so much more worth it! Whitey from Seasport Charters told me that while sometimes bait out fishes jigs (and vise versa), jigs seem to account for the better fish. I say keep at it mate!

Tough day yesterday

Sun, 2014-04-13 10:55

I had good fish on the sounder and no takers on bait. I sitched to jigs to try and wake them up but still nothing. I also tried Mcarthy plastics as well but nothing turned them on. Bait won out on the day and all my fish were on bait. I just think somedays they will not eat no matter what is put infront of them.

Fishobrad80, yeah mate I'm definately going to start to pay a bit attention to the alminac and as you have said keeping a diary, I've been talking about it for to long. It was such a nice day even just being out in the boat so at least if all the information I've gathered is suggesting it might be slow ,if we still decide to head out we will do so not having such high hopes and it may help if we come home empty handed. Does anyone know if there is an almanac app you can get for your phone?

Ps one good fish on a jig is better than multiple on baits for sure

 Was bottom fishing walpole,

Was bottom fishing walpole, last week also found the bottom fishing hard work, plenty of fish on the sounder but very few takers on jig and bait. Still managed a small feed, it sounds to me everyone is struggling at the moment fish just not on the chew.

Sun, 2014-04-13 15:18

It's easy to become a bit of a jigging snob , but the deal is it doesn't work all the time. (neither do plastics or bait)

switch it up if you are having a hard time

I always take a rod or two for bait fishing.  Sometimes they'll go the paternoster , sometimes the drift bait ,

livebaiting seems to wake things up, and other times you can't buy one.

Thats fishing

I haven't had heaps of luck

Sun, 2014-04-13 16:24

I haven't had heaps of luck lately _ reckon the fish are off a bit.

I use both plastic and real baits - mixed bag really, fish definitely seem to prefer the real thing but plastics have some definite advantages. They are good when the bait thieves chew off your mulies in seconds flat.
