Needing help in choosing the right boat for open fishing First timer

Hi Everyone!

I am calling on everyone that can give me valuable advice on buying a second hand boat to be used for open water eventually. I have never owned a boat and I have been told a long time ago I should look at a 5m minimum size. Half cabin to protect from the weather would be good. I have been looking on Gumtree at lot of boats as well as Ebay Australia wide to find something fairly inexpensive to start with. A lot of them are around the 5k mark and aged. This is where I need the help and guidance as I am not sure of make, year, etc.. If you can help me I would be very grateful!

Cheers

Kim

Hey mate in my honest opinion you will find it very hard if not impossible to find a 5m minimum ocean worthy boat for 5k, my first boat was a 6m hustler runabout with a stern drive I paid 5k for it, and was the biggest piece of crap, I ended up spending 15k on it making it sea worthy, then sold it for 10k in my opinion I would save atleast another 5-10k then you will pick up something decent and not waste your money or risk your life, for 5k you'll probably get a good dingy for the river and the sound on a good day, that's my opinion anyway others may disagree

 agree with Robert

and maybe skip the half cabin, you wont sit in it out at sea and it'll be just where you throw all the shit instead of storing properly

Just a runabout or maybe cuddy, even a centre console (though they dont suit me)-look for an older Trailcraft or similar but not for 5K

You could get a fairly good tinny for that money, excellent starter boat and fairly easy to sell later also-shop around and dont rush, best time now to look though.

A $5K POS is probably going to be yours forever but a $5K tinny you can move later ok.

The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.

Everyone's just winging it.

For a boat fishing out wide

For a boat fishing out wide (outside of bay, estuary, rivers systems) I'd want the motor alone to be worth somewhere approaching $5,000 (at least). Anything less is potentially asking for trouble.

Also as suggested anything around that mark other than a tinny is likely to cost you more in the long run anyway.

You'd need to either consider increasing your budget or going something smaller for closer in work.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking you need to go out far to get decent size fish, you'd be surprised what can be caught in close (with less cost in fuel).

Good luck

Up the budget or you are going to regret it.

As a first boat owner perhaps a tinny at that price, do some closer in work, get the "feel" for the ocean, navigating hazards etc. Always pretty easy and not loosing to much selling a tinny compared with afloading a cheap and nasty bigger boat.

Older trailcraft is tough as nails, a bit rough but will protect you as RobH said.

Life is worth more than 5K when you are stuck out there in a piece off old crap.
