New boat record.
I’m not a huge fan of Reds, there are better eating fish out there and you don’t get much fillet off them for their size. But they do look good so they seem to be at the top of the wish list for most customers. They cop a hammering and finding them yet alone a good one is getting harder, so it is nice to be surprised by a good one. While testing some new spots in the 80’s a bit north this one popped to the surface with very little fight. I knew it was good but it had been a while since we had seen a 10kg + red so was not too sure but still very happy. But when we got the scales out it was more shock than anything. It went 15kg on my good tested set of scales (went 16 on the first set). If you told me last week that you got a 15kg red I would prob say they don’t get that big here. Boat record prior to this was 13kg. It was part of a cracker 4 days of fishing with one of our groups. Bagging out every day and the and the next day having a 1 anchor bag out of big Goldband in 40min. Also went 4/3/2 on blacks with the little bit of trolling we did in the 4 days, biggest we put as 300lb.

Wow, killer red, I don’t mind them, but yes, there’s better fish about.

Absolute monster
What an absolute monster of a red, well done to the fisher who pulled that up, I have to agree with some of the other comments above my taste buds are more attuned to other fish so far as taste goes, but each to their own the same as wine I guess.
Does that mean I wouldn't enjoy a fillet of red, no not likely.

Bejesus that's a solid red
It is interesting that you are not a huge fan of the reds. That begs the question that in order, what would you rate as the top five?

Marlin
What depth did you get the marlin in? We were up in Coral Bay last week. Spent a solid morning trolling out in 100-120m. Raised plenty of marlin but they were really small and we couldn't get them to stick. Had them following the boat and hitting the lures but no luck hooking up. We were using single hooked soft oscars in abount a medium size. Didn't see anything big. Caught a couple of solid dollies out there though.

From memory that one was in
From memory that one was in about 90m. A bit of a odd area for them. Best areas is the 60-70m and just and you hit 100m. As with all game fishing can be hit and miss with them. Have put in a couple long arvos after bagging out early this week and only managed to bearly raise 2. So if you Raised plenty in just 1 morning you are doing very well. As for keeping them hooked, Its about adapting to the fish I guess. We wnet 11/7/1 on the 4th day of Gamex this year. We where geared to chase big blues on 37kg but just kept pulling hooks on tiny blacks. So for the first time we tryed switch baiting with a little 10kg spin setup and every fish that took bait stayed hooked.

Thanks
Thanks for getting back to me. Appreciate that. I will have to work on our technique. Bought half a dozen lures for the outing and without even bringing a marlin to the boat they are a bit dinged up. Not cheap this marlin fishing!! As a side note I had a group of mates spend a week with you guys recently. They had a ball. Pretty sure they have rebooked for next year.
