Is a new F130 Yamaha enough for a 6m Fraser?
Submitted by fishboy009 on Fri, 2015-09-25 17:03
Hi Guys and Gals
I'm thinking of putting a new Yamaha on a 6m fraser, i've got some competitive quotes from the local dealers but one was saying the 130 wouldn't be big enough!!! I was thinking this was just some dodgy salesman tecniques to try and sell a bigger engine and get more money in his pocket, currently I have a 150 V6 mercury saltwater on the back which pushes it along no probs what so ever. (will be up for sale if anyones interested)
So the question is going out to someone who owns a similar setup or just knows their shit, cos once the new engines bolted on the back there is no turning back.
of course i'd like more HP but we all have our limits.
Any feedback would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks
James

About another $2500.
I know it would be better but i'm still trying to justify the $17000 for the 130

You have to weight up the
You have to weight up the options, weight verses HP.plus Yamaha have extended the fitup option, free.i would love a new 130
on a new boat but can only dream, will have to stick with the 80 yammy.
props maketh the motor,if you not a speed demon cruising at 20kts and top end of say about alittle of 30.the new rang of props going with that motor have a rubber damping system in a rang of sizes ,or revert to a solas for a more aggressive pitch for getting onto the plane and top end.
i think it is a good choice good luck with whatever purchase you get.

Not too fused about being a
Not too fused about being a hoon, but then again I don't want some fitness freak overtaking me on his ski.
Reason for the upgrade to a 4 stroke is to get more range, I can comfortably get to Rotto and back on what i've got but was thinking FAD's this summer and didn't want to fill the boat with cans.
Thanks for your input!!!!

Yep, the non Verado Mercury
Yep, the non Verado Mercury 4-stroke has some very good feedback on The Hull Truth.
I always thought when going from 2-stroke to 4-stroke you normally go up a notch in hp on the 4-stroke for similar performance. You would also be going from v6 to 4 cylinder. You might notice the difference when loaded up.

I agree the Merc has been good but I like change, done some research and the Yamaha has come out the best in my eyes and once I've got my heart set on something it's hard to change my mind.

130 a little too small?
will be a little underdone in my opinion.
old man has a 626 Avanti, basically the same hull as the Fraser, and he has a 140 4st Johnson on the back.
it does get along alright but Max's out at 30kts and about 5500rpm - Wah is prob running a little hard for my liking.
could prob get a little better performance by playing around with props but and extra 10-20hp would make a big difference.

You will hate going from a torquey 150 2 strike to a doughy 130 4 stroke. At least go the same hp or you will be kicking yourself.
Better to leave the 150 saltwater on it for another season until you can afford a 150 or 175 hp 4 stroke.

Always???
Don't know about that. My old Dommie is rated for 200HP--it would be f**ng terrifying 115 hp gives it 34 knots @ 5800-6000 and 20 knots (at sea)@ 4000 rpm. But I guess I never have calm lakes and waterways to traverse for far.

Not only HP but getting Prop right....
It is not only about the HP, you want to get your Prop right as well.
When I fitted my new Suzi 115HP to my 585 Fraser, I went through like 5 props just trying the get the specification Suzuki recommended (WOT @ 5500 RPM).
With the factory fitted and recommended prop, I got like 28 knots and 6k+ RPM (WOT), now with the prop adjusted to the Hull I get around 35 knots @ 5400 RPM (WOT).
Still biting me back that I didn't opt for the 4 blade prop, I reckon that would have been the perfect match !
just dhu it

2 stroke to 4
as the others have said a change from 2 stroke to four stroke you will notice the difference in power and speed , I had a 6.10 trailly with 150 Optimal which was great. Then changed over to a yammy 150. 4 stroke and found a big reduction in pick up , the yammy did all right around 20 to 24 knots in reasonable conditions but after that the motor started drinking the fuel , four stroke s are the same as your car engine they don't like high revs and being pushed outside the power band area .
if you thinking of dropping down to a 130 , I would definitely wait until the 150 is affordable iMO

Not necessarily
On a 5.6 m Swiftcraft Dominator , I went from twin 60hp 2 strokes in excellent condition to an F115 Yamaha. I lost absolutely no top speed whatsoever, and pick up is so close you couldn't really call it. The 4 s may actually be quicker off the mark, but, as i said, too close to call. And the fuel, of course, went down remarkably. Yes, I am doing more RPM to get 20 knots at sea, but the motor itself is higher revving, (6000rpm vs 5200rpm)so you would expect that. (4000rpm cruise vs 3400 rpm for 20 kts)
For every experience there is an exception, don't say"always".
