The new Fisheries app a set up?
I just get the feeling we are being set up here.
Fisheries will use what info they get from the app to say we are catching more than we are allocated. Remembering fisheries are saying our quota works out at 2.8kg per fisher, which never added up to begin with, most fishers get more than that a single trip. The app is just one step in the process to say the new rules are not working. Remembering the new rules are pretty much encouraging people to high grade to 4 big dhus per trip.
At some point Fisheries have had an ohh shit moment and realized they have been under estimating the rec catch level. Sweeping that under the carpet, because they would look incompetant. We have come up with "the stocks are not recovering fast enough". So they wanted to limit the season to 3 months per year at the very least when they started this process. But there was huge kick back all the bussiness and smal towns effected. Just look how its destroyed the charter fishery and many tackle stores etc. and thats at a 6 month ban!
When the first consultation came out one of the options to manage the fishery was to nominate to fish. The option was to have 2 days available per angler per year. Another option was to use tags, one would expect about 2 tags per licence to keep even close to the 2.8kg. I will guess the information from the app will move us to one of these options.

The new rules will show tomorrow and through the Christmas holidays what they have really created. The mad rush will be on to not only just catch a fish but stock up to get through the next closures. They have compressed they dhufish rush, I expect to see fisheries, UWA surveys out to prove a point...

Thanks Pete F for posting that original cpnsultation wording.
I'm amazed they would suggest the 2 day option, as anybody that goes to sea knows thatis unworkable, given weather, seasons etc. Maybe it was proposed to simply encourage support for the alternative limited fishing seasons option.
Anyway, heading out tomorrow for the final pot pull, but given the season opens tomorrow it is likely I'll chase some pinks too. Have only ever taken a few each year in the past when needed for a special meal, but now it's a case of fish them when you can.

I think you give them far too much credit mate. They have very limited actual research to go off so they have a very reactive approach to fisheries management imo. As far as I know they only brought in the increased limit because of the petition recfishers filled out. I have no doubt tho that they will use any info gained from the app against us like you say
