New Outboard vs getting engine mounts repaired

i am looking for opinions  / advise to help me make a decision

currently i have twin 60HP mercs on my 5.96 trailcarft center cabin both done around 450hrs (2006 make)

the engine mounts are getting to a point where they need to be repaired

i have been giving an estimate of around 2.5k per motor and been advised by my boat mecanic to just put a new single outboard on

he has suggested a 150hp vtec Honda (approx 20k fitted) and told me to stay away from the mercury.

so the decision is

- putting back towards the 20k would be what ever i get for selling my 60hp twins and the 5k on the engine mounts, then i have a brand new motor

- or just getting the engine mounts done and keeping them untill upgading my boat, which by then the motors could be in excess of 15 years old.

any other Brands, Horse power , or what would you do , or bad experiences comment welcome!

i think this decision will need to be made by the end of summer at the latest and i will just nurse these mercs untill then.

cheers Steve.

Yamaha

Fri, 2015-12-04 10:37

I'm a big fan of Yamaha outboards even tho Iv got a 2004 75 four stroke merc on my boat but it's a Yamaha power head under a merc cover been an awesome motor and still is , after living in Broome for 25 years and having lots of mates in the perling industry where the boats are thrashed by different people every day driving them like they stole them I watched some companies switch to different brands as they  came out like Honda and Suzuki but they all went back to the Yamaha probly the same reason they give Toyota cars to the communities up that way and not Nissans but I'm sure it's got a lot to do with how you look after your gear aswell I've got mates who swear by Suzuki and Honda but I do think Yamaha are the go , my opinion tho .

All the dive boats up here run Yammys and for good reason. They just keep going and going and they get a fair thrashing.

Wouldn't put anything else on my boats other than a Yammy.

yep buying a new engines is like buyiong a new car when you ask people what they think. All comes down to each persons individual preference and experience.

Personally, engines are fairly well matched in terms of reliability these days, however Honda seem to be more expensive (Up there with verardo's)

Do some shopping around mate, take a look at the Suzuki 140 or 150 as well as the Yamaha's, fairly sure they will be well under 20k fitted.

pics?

Im having a hard time imagining how the mounts can be so worn (on both) that they are in danger of failing, they are usually a fairly hefty casting?
Can you chuck up a photo-very curious as to what the problem is and why he is not able to stop them "slightly rubbing against one another"?

Those engines should have 10 more years and 500-1000hrs before anything short of serious neglect warrants replacement

Just curious-he doesnt sell Mercury?
The Merc 150 looks to be a pretty good engine...

Sorry Rob no photos yet

Sorry Rob no photos yet .

cant get a good shot of the metal rubbing against the shaft in the dark

when the motors are under load they are pushing against the shaft and the metal is rubbing

there is a fair bit of play in the motor to the shaft when you move them up and down

no worries

No worries but I think you need to ask the question of your mechanic

"why is this happening on both my engines requiring them to be replaced at less than half their life"?

I replaced the mounts on a 90mercury, the parts cost $450 from memory and the labour was definitely well under $1k. I'd goEt a 2nd quote before making a decision
