Pflueger patriarch 40 loaded with gosen jigging braid, love it! Ridiculously light weight, awesome drag, can't fault it. Can't wait to try it out against a few salmon. As for the braid, 8 weave, casts like a dream, Pe1=21lb.

On that budget you should try and track down a twinpower SW 4000. Awesome reel. Might push the funds though with braid.

Give the Seagate light 3500 a look at. Ive got one recently and spooled it up with 20lb daiwa tournament hyper PE. The reel was about $265 and the braid was a bargain at $66 at tw morley, 150m spool, 300m spool will still come easily within ur budget. Got my reel matched up to a daiwa lateo pirates 96ML, on sale atm at tw morley for $149 for vip members.

I'll second that about the Seagate. Awesome reel. My original input about the twinpower stands but is in a different league and a lot dearer. The Seagate though is an excellent reel.

Spin reel

Sat, 2014-03-22 08:22

Hi mate,

For what your suggesting both the TD SOLII 3000 or even the 2500 would do the job nicely. The other reel thats been mentioned is the Pflueger Patriarch. These reels are very understated and mix both lightness and smoothness very well. Either of those reels spooled with 20lb will do very well. If you want a super thin, smooth and strong braid the Gossen PE 1.2-21lb braid is very good.

Let us know if we can help.

It was timely to read this topic because after months of looking for a reel of this nature,  I had been eyeing up the Shimano Vanquish 4000 XG.  Now having seen the Shimano Rarenium 4000 XG mentioned in this thread, I can see that the specs of the two are almost identical, but the Rarenium is almost half the price of the Vanquish.

Anyone know what justifies the much higher price tag of the Vanquish ?  I might just buy two Rareniums instead, if not at least one. In any case the Vanquish does not appear to be available in Australia, only by mail order from overseas.

From what I've gathered the Vanquish uses a magnumlite rotor which makes it a little more rigid than the rarenium.  Not really sure what else sets it apart from the other.  I've ordered one and it should be arriving this week.  More than happy to let you have a look if u stay SOR.
