Well done, and a nice baldy there. Whole squid presented on a snelled rig to look as real as possible is awesome BBash bait.

Nice Baldie and nice boat too. Gotta love the Genesis.

Thats what I use. But these days I thread the bottom hook through the mantle of the squid a bit better so it hides more of the wire inside. This rig on a standard paternoster has worked pretty well for me over the years.

Whole squid and mulie combo. I use a single Gama 10/0 on the other dropper, but mix it up with different sizes, lumo squids etc.

Basically home made snell using wire. Its an old pic when I was experimenting with them, so ignore the bottom one as the extra lumo does nothing.

Hope that helps.

snelled hooks

Thu, 2010-10-28 12:20

new to this posting so bare with me its an age thing i guess , thanks Andy yes quiet happy with the Genesis , just that im starting to question what im doing or have done , this year fish wise  have had limited succsses , perhaps if not asking too much pic of whole  rig dist. from weight to first set of hooks etc , i use sinle hook x 3 approx 150mm apart but only approx 100mm off the main line & 250mm off the bottom weight

normal squid you catch is bigger do you sometimes cut into strips , put wings on etc.

Rig

Thu, 2010-10-28 12:27

The rig you mention is fine. I only use 2 droppers about 300mm off main line and say 400mm gap between droppers and the bottom dropper sits about 400mm above the sinker. Dropper loops are about 200mm long (I use twisted droppers but others use three way swivels etc.)

The key to successful snapper and dhue fishing is lots of exploration and a good sounder.

Hey Andi sorry to jump in

But have you found using the lumo tube makes a difference. I havent tried it up here in Dampier but the 2 off us routinely used a lumo tube above our rigs fishing for tailor in Mandurah, and IMO killed a pig compared with the fishos not using one.

I have plenty left in the kit and thought I might give it a bash, especially night fishing up here, but interested in your response for deep day fishing aswell.

Lumo

I think it does make a difference. I'd say 80% of my fish are on the snell and 20% on the single hook.

Most of my deckies will vouch for that... its pretty rare that that rig gets outfished for Dhuies unless you are fishing with someone like Kasey (hehehe). Then its jigs that come up trumps.

Rigging tips & Pics

Thu, 2010-10-28 15:45

Hi Frank,

For Dhufish & Snapper in the 20-50m depth we like the driftbait rig with whole california squid. Rig is 2 x 6/0 Mustard Bigred hooks, bean sinker 3/4/5 oz depending on drift and 1m of 80lb trace line like Jinkai Plus.

We aslo crimp off ontop of the sinker to stop the sinker from travelling up the line and tangling (see Ryan Thipthorp pic attached/pinched from his gallery)

As for shallow water ie 5-20m for inshore Pink snapper & Dhufish we use same rig but a small #1 or #2 ball sinker instead. We aslo crimp off ontop of the sinker to stop the sinker from travelling up the line and tangling as above. (see Ryan Thipthorp pic attached/also pinched from his gallery lol)

welcome to the site. looks like some have already helped you out with the rigs and theyre pretty much the same as i use. as mentioned the lumo works well in deeper water where there is limited light. i have mixed success but thats probably where i fish as i havent found that magic area yet Laughing. hope to see some great pics of you with the big fish after the ban
