new ski ready to go
Submitted by makoshark on Fri, 2015-01-02 00:04
Hi guys,
I sold My big boat and started to researched jetski fishing and got hooked on the idea.
So I recently purchased a 2015 fxho with a Whitey box. I have been setting her up for fishing including all safety gear for offshore fishing. I still need to purchase a sounder and install that somewhere.
I am keen to go far and wide and avaliable most days if you want some company on the water.
Any trick you have learnt from your experience would be awesome cheers

Welcome to the Jetski
Welcome to the Jetski Fishing Scene. You will have a ball- I sold boat, then sold fishing kayak and now enjoy everyday that I can get out on the Ski fishing.
I'm mainly fishing Cockburn/Warnbro Sound. Check the WA Boating rules as to how far "wide" you are allowed,as there are restriction's on length of vessels.
There's lot's to read on the Jetski Fishing Section on here.
Enjoy your new fishing experience.

fishing
Thanks guy,
I look forward to getting out and catching some fish. must admit been having a ball crusing around the ocean running the ski in.
I to bought a fishing yak set it up with all the fruit, relised quickly i work as a sea kayaking instructor and paddling and not getting paid for it is no fun.
I know the rules but personally think its a joke as modern skis are just as reliable as anyother new single motor vessel. A jet ski can capsize and be turned back over and continue. A bit like a sea kayaking. I am qualified to take a group of school kids on an expedition paddling across to rotto. A sea kayak capsizes your roll back up and keep going.
recently a guy was rescues because his dingy was swamped by a wave. I understand that rules are there because their are unreliable skis around but how many blue band mecurys do you still see behind boat.
i look forward to reading all the threads and hopefully catching up others and chasing the sun whilst living the dream
cheers

Hi, I just bought a ski and am mad keen to fish from it. What are the best methods, do you guys just use lures or does anyone use bait. I imagine it can get a bit messy using bait. Also do you drift or anchor up?
cheers

simple answer
Simply put, yes you can do all of them, bait is fine if you cut it on your eskie.
you are allowed 5NM out so you can even jig. I tend to get a bit sick if I anchor up to long, so I do quite a bit of drifting.
you can also troll down 3 mile reef. Post some pics of your rig.
My ski should be up and ready to roll again by next weekend.

Hi psion, thanks for the
Hi psion, thanks for the reply. I don't have any rig as yet or any 'offshore' tackle. I will get by with my 9ft shorespin for now. I'm new to jet skis and boating in general. I bought a 2013 seadoo gti a while ago so have just been out blasting around getting used to it with the family but it was always going to be used for fishing too. Any advice on setting up would be a start. I assume the weather can get pretty shitty in an instant so do's and do'nts would be helpful too. The big one I'm unsure of at the moment is battery charging and maintenance because I didn't get a manual with the ski. Any advice would be brill, cheers

I keep mine on a Projecta
I keep mine on a Projecta "trickle" Charger- brings it up to full charge and holds it there. There's been a couple of us that have failed batteries out on the water.
I have now rigged up an auxilary battery-this runs the Fishfinder,Marine radio and nav lights. Also can be used as a backup to start the Ski.
You will also need to fit an Epirb to your Ski.

Is the epirb for going over
Is the epirb for going over 2n miles? I have the flare kit ,I thought that was good for up to 2 nautical miles?
back to the battery , do you remove it from the ski whilst charging? I've read some threads on the seadoo forum but they all have conflicting advice, and I wasn't sure if the Chargers were just for older ski models?

rotto fishing
I raced out just off rotto and had a great day out fishing. Hate wrasse.
I leave my battery in the ski whilst charging, no dramas.
For my sounder I use a 7.5amp/hr battery which I store in the front compart.

Not caught
I travel offshore often, I carry all the correct safety gear.
my 2015 fxho is alot more reliable and seaworthy than some of the boats I have seen down the boat ramp.
my ski is 190mm short of the min Length required. I am level sea kayaking instructor which means I can take school kids for a paddle over to rotto. Personally the guidelines need to be reviewed as the majority of ski are extremely reliable and seaworthy. If you fall, off it stops you climb back on if you roll it, re roll and jump back on.
Just my two cents. I am happy to. Put a boarding matt behind to make it over 4m long.

wont help
Been chasing this for over a year. Not enough people are complaining to make any politician even look at it a 2nd time. Bearing in mind that WA is the only state that limits sit-on jetski distance.
I've sent emails to all and sundry and phoned the powers that be. they won't even do me the curtesy of replying to my emails. The phone calls (when I get through) end in "Well, why don't you write a full justifcation and i'll look at it and then decide if it is worthwhile taking further.
you can add anything you want to the back of the jetski and it won't help, the length of you ski is defined as the manuacture's length. I wanted to bolt storage wings on to the sides to extend my ski past the 3.75m. When I enquired about it the response was 1/ it won't effect the "recognised length" 2/ the hull would have to be "resurveyed/ passed" for use, as I had drilled holes in it.
Bit confusing. Ironically I am not allow passed 5nm on my ski, but a kayak longer than 3.75m is. Should said kayak get into trouble you are expected go rescue it on your ski.
Maybe the answer is to tow a 4m kyak behind your ski. (just kidding)

Personally the jetsking community looks after their crafts better than the local Bogan jumping waves at the enterance of hillarys boat harbour.
