New sounder

Looking at a new sounder , old boat had the foruno 585  with tm260 transducer and was a gem.

So with new (second hand) boat can't afford the 295 but was wondering

about the 587 or 588 is the $500 difference justified?

And what transducer a 1kw obviously would be the go?

The Furuno 587 with a TM260 for mainly 15-90m but have done a couple of Deep drops to 320m. I reckon it is a great alrounder.

Transducer/sounder

Wed, 2016-02-03 06:58

Not sure of the benefits of the 588 over the 587 but when it comes to transducer selection look at the tm275, it is double the price if of a tm260 but it is a wide beam transducer. Talk to the people at ch smith in Victoria they are very knowledgable, I just put a ss175 through hull in my boat and so far are more than happy with the results.

Tm275

Wed, 2016-02-03 09:19

no, tm stands for transom mount ! Google tm275 up there is info on the airmar website on beam angles and also on ch smith website.

Let me know if you want more info on the wide beam and I'll send you my phone number and I'll tell you what I have experienced. With mine.

About the only thing the 588

Wed, 2016-02-03 09:56

About the only thing the 588 has over the 587 is rezboost.....I just hope its not a gimmick like Accufish and bottom discrimination was for the 585->587 upgrade.

It appears Rezboost is Furnuno's way to make their sounder look like CHIRP......why you would want to do this I don't know. I have been trying to make my CHIRP screen output look like my Furuno.......

As long as you can turnoff Rezboost then for $500 you may as well get the latest, or spend the $500 on the best transducer you can if money is an issue.

 I have the 588 running tm260.

Yes you can turn all the crap off. Haven't used it for fishing yet only diving so i cant really comment on the rezboost yet!

Ok

Wed, 2016-02-03 13:19

so if the furuno doesn't run chirp and the tm275 is a simrad chirp

transducer  why would you go that? Also if the beam is wide

that's great for shallower water but would loose definition as you go deeper surely.

Long story

Wed, 2016-02-03 14:28

hey striker, it's a long story but it's not like comparing a postage stamp to a footy field, if you go on to the airmar website it will give you a depth and footprint size, from memory a tm260 only looks at a 6mtr dia area at about 40mtrs deep whereas a tm275 wide beam is maybe 12-15mtrs dia. The processor in the head unit sorts out the definition. Do yourself a favour and talk to someone like ch smith who knows what they are talking about then you can be sure your money is not wasted.

TM275 is a CHIRP tranny not

Wed, 2016-02-03 16:10

TM275 is a CHIRP tranny not the right tranny for a 588....it is tone burst only 50/200 kHz.

I understand the high chirp will actually work quite well with a conventional 200 kHz tone burst, but the low 50 kHz side will be hopeless as you will only get small amount of the rated power (too hard to explain why....trust me....haha).

There are advantages to a wide beam and also to a narrow beam. If you only had one beam, I would go a wide beam as it is better in the normal dhuie range of 30-60m. BUT....with a TM260, you get a wide beam 50 kHz side so just run both side by side on the screen and you get the best of both worlds.

588 price

Wed, 2016-02-03 17:04

 trymax.com.au/furuno-fcv588-rezboost-fish-finder-and-transducer-package/

$2090 with a P66 seems ok for Australia. I see in the states there is only about a $50 price premimum over the 587, why its $300-$500 over here is beyond me.  Same with the 627 to 628 a massive price hike for the new model where in the US the difference is negligible.

Still not convinced

Wed, 2016-02-03 20:31

that the 588 offers anything extra that is 'useful' than the 587 but

seems pretty obvious that the tm260 is the way forward, though at one of the deep drop nights

i went to the furuno agent was pushing the furuno transducer(obviously) to pair with the sounders

any one running that setup?

Hondex

Thu, 2016-02-04 08:56

Hondex have just introduced a 8 inch model onto the market, l am waiting for sea trials to be done by Fremantle Electonics  and might go that way, they have a good write up around the world. These units push out 1KW of power, where the Furonus only push out 600watts, yes hard to believe but read the box andspecs.

It is a moot point whether

Thu, 2016-02-04 16:16

It is a moot point whether the Furuno 587/588 puts out 600W or 1000W (my understanding is that it is 1000W for the 587/588 and only 600W for the 627/628), as I only use a gain of 3 out of 10 in 400 m of water, so power is not the issue. Its really about the combined sensitivity of the sounder and tranny.
