New trailer required, Karratha
Submitted by pale ale on Wed, 2012-02-08 17:13
My trailer has enough rust on it to force me to get a new one. What brands are available in Perth, and any ideas how much to transport to Karratha?? I have a Haines signature 650F.
Any companies making aluminium trailers, and any feedback on them appreciated
thanks

Hey, solly, have you done your homework?? Probably out fishing. Water is glorious today. I'm working, but shot into road runners for lunch and the whole archipelago was glassed out.

also
if you arent deadset on ally try John Papas for a Trailcraft Ibeam trailer.
I think they are making them now.
At least with Ibeam you can see assess and tend to any corrosion.
Edit; spoke to Papas today, they dont make trailcraft trailers anymore, neither do trailcraft.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.

Great response guys, thanks.
Great response guys, thanks. Looks like 2 minute noodles on the menu for a while.
I have been very thorough with washing the trailer, but the damage was already done when I purchased the boat.
How many people give their trailer a quick wash after launching?? I'm sure the trailer sitting in the sun all day with salt on it is a major factor in corrosion.

spray the hell out of it with
spray the hell out of it with lanolin mate, it is a pretty good inhibitor
i also rigged up garden black retic hose on the inside of the main chanels with little micro sprinkler heads on them all the way along. just had a hose fiting on the end so i could connect it up when i got home.
you can get lanolin on ebay pretty cheap tehse days as well
for interests sake i purchased an offroad roadmaster 5.2 m keel roller on a single axel 2 years ago, it cost around 5700 which included delivery to K town. stainless bushes and heavy duty rollers and skids. had single springs on it as well, hate leaf springs on saltwater boat trailers, can never stop the rust.

Agree with the single springs!!!
My current trailer is beyond salvaging, so I'm gonna get a new one and treat it with great care. I love my boat and cant see myself selling for many years, so a new trailer will be a good buy.
Does anyone have preference to brake types?? Cable, hydraulic, electric???

Just got a new ali trailer before christmas for a 7mtr Whittley Sea Legend from Ace trailers, cost about 9k all up on the road, best move I ever made dragged it up to Ktown for Christmas and was extremely happy with the way it went. Give Guy a call at Ace he was great to deal with and would go to him again if I ever need another trailer.

Thanks again guys, looks like Ace trailers is a popular choice.
Now for another question, are the skids / bunks suitable for fibreglass boats or should I stick with rollers. My current trailer, although a bit rusty was set up perfectly for drive on with rollers. I can retrieve my boat in about one minute

Hi Pale,
I have skids and rollers on mine, it has a V roller section at the back to line up for drive on then a couple of rollers up the middle and two sets of skids to the sides. very easy to drive on and can even have guide poles fitted to the side of the trailer if you want to. If you talk to Guy he will set it up for you however you want all rollers, part rollers part skids or all skids the choice is yours, I will try and take some photos over the weekend and post for you. Agree with snappermiles with the posiflex axles the ride and the way the boat sits on the trailer is really good.

Skid Marks
Rollers shouldnt be used on Glass boats due to the small surface area of contact (Cracks the gel coat). Go the skids mate, with keel rollers..
Actually, now I think of it, there are heaps of aluminium skid trailers at the yacht club every weekend with no boats on them, just grab one that suits!

This is how easy it is with a good skid trailer. Its not very deep either, notice the back of the bunks just in the water.

Nice work. What material is on the skids to prevent scratches / marks on the hull. If the skids were dry, would it be a bit sticky?

nothing wrong with rollers
on a glass boat provided you have enough of them and skids are not good for glass boats they will damage the
gel coat even with carpet when the dried up salt builds up you will get a lot of scratches where the skids go
go the rolers i built my trailer for my 6m glass boat and have 32 rollers more would not be to many.

Our bunks are made from stuff called durabunk, a plastic/rubber stuff . A squirt with silicone spray makes it slicker than catshit on lino![](http://fishwrecked.com/sites/all/libraries/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/wink_smile.gif)
