anywhere in the estuary has crabs....no shortage really just go around where your nearest boat ramp is...anything from mullet to chicken wings will work
as greatrex says the place is alive with crabs at the moment,if you launch from the nivara ramp go straight accross the estuary and stop when you get to about 500n from the far side in about 1.5 metres of water and you can't go wrong. make sure you have your RFBL with you and only take your ten or twenty fisheries are red hot at the moment. have a great time
Launched from novara on Sunday and got my limit in three pulls. Had to drop 8 that would have size back in the water while I was packin up my nets. Spoke to a couple of ppl and all were doing well
sheep necks in a bait basket works for me. harvey estruary in the deep water 2m+ (south of the four poster) in the heat of the day or shallower if the morning or evening. good to hear there are plenty of sized crabs, we were there at Xmas and for every crab we kept we threw about 10 undersized back!
We have the same idea mate, but were going down on sat to do some scooping, never done it before, just reading up on it now, any advice for wading n scooping? sorry for the highjack CJ..
We went recently in Dawesville and got our 10 in 2 runs. We went late arvo at about 4.30pm. We spent more time baiting up and then cleaning the nets than we did catching crabs.
Any bait will do. Like others have said though, make sure you put the bait in cages otherwise the blowies will take the lot. We used old fish heads and mulies.
Don't forget if you are scooping to wear polarized glasses. It makes the biggest difference. Also while scooping during the day you will find most of the crabs buried in the sand so be sure to poke around the sand patches to find them and remember some good booties! A welding glove or two is handy for holding and measuring while your at it.
look for the grey patches of sand there could well be a buried crab there. if you have a mask and stick your head under, you can see the outline of the body and two eyes watching you.
Well we went for a scoop around midday just by estuary road, caught 3 in the scoop but only 1 was size (went back), got stung lots by the small jellyfish so we knocked that one on the head.
So we moved and set the 1 net we had, only 1 keeper but we let him go to, move on to coondnup at set the net only 1 keeper again, got my 1st nip off him, set him free again, had the light rod in catching small whiting, trumpeter and the dreaded blowies, mossies started to come in so we buggered off, was a great day , i can see it being very enjoyable, but whether i decide to do it much is all about if i can be bothered for the hours drive to mandurah.
Alot of the locals were saying there have been bagging out in an hour anytime of the day, but just not they day i go.
Yesterday was not ideal for scooping with the strong northerly and overcast conditions. We put the boat in where you went first and managed our limit but we were snorkling. I think if you try in better conditions you will have more success.
I take their top off, clean out the dead man's fingers, and then cut in half. then steam for 5min. They get much less cooking as you're not waiting for the water to come back on the boil, they're good to go straight away.
save some of the estruary water abd bring it to the boil. put some ice in with the crbs to make an ice slurry, this will put them to sleep. put crabs into boiling water and bring back to the boil as quick as you can (a big burner and large pot is the trick). boil for exactly six minutes and then put the crabs straight back into the ice slurry to stop them over cooking. clean and peel when they are cooked.

What about overcast days?
I've been told to wait till later in the arvo and crab into the setting sun with pots, but does this mean crabs are more active on overcast days?

Probably bit of a food hygiene issue there - don't reuse the slurry!
