Yep definitely smart and just appeared curious - could have tipped him if it wanted.....
Doco where scientist walked into the water on one of those sloped beaches where the orcas grab the seal pups off the beach always sticks in my mind, he splashes about in a few feet of water and 3 or so orcas come up and stop about a metre from him and have a good look before swimming back out after looking about a minute.

Many years ago I was diving for crays around Carnac when something whacked me pretty yard in the side while I had me head under a ledge chasing a cray and that turned out to be a seal chasing the crays in my catch bag, scared the bejesus out of me,
