Bogged big times 3

Seems one adventurist person went too far out to launch their boat and got bogged, another 3 went to help with the same result. The lucky one to get out was a police 4x4 but sadly the others have to wait a while. Happened at Bush Bay / New Beach south of Carnarvon this afternoon.

Bugger is not the word to describe it

Bugger

3 people are going to have some major engine issues when they recover their vehicles, and in about 12 months there will be some major body problems I dare say.

Tides

Wed, 2015-05-20 06:49

Usually 1.7 metre highs but the last couple of highs have been 1.9s.
The beach where this happened in very flat and with the very low tide they went right out, broke through the surface crust and sadly paid the price.

Ultimately depends on the policy  - also whether it constitutes off-roading would be another matter - depending on the location and use at the time.  It's not like someone was climbing a significant hill or jumping dunes etc.

For the beach launchers may pay to check your policy or ask insurer via email and get reply in writing to cover your butt.....

Gazetted Rd

Wed, 2015-05-20 21:07

Some policies that I have had stated that you were covered if on a gazetted road. Pretty sure a beach wont be covered in that case.

Others have said anywhere in Australia (or words to that effect) which should cover you wherever you are.

Most likely it is all case by case based on your PDS wording

Had a mate many many moons ago roll his Jeep just South of Lancelin after "a blowout forced the vehicle down a steep embankment on the side of the road".

Could've sworn we were doing handbrakies down the maddy patch.

Those cars would have to be written off i reckon, a fitter at mine i used to work at drove his 96 td 80 series back to kal from laverton using the back dirt roads and got stuck in flood water that deep. Insurance wrote it off and payed him out, but thats a bit different i suppose

Whisper

Wed, 2015-05-20 20:21

Heard a whisper that is why the cops were there, a few threats were offered once the second vehicle got bogged. don't know is there is any truth in it though.

If it was me, get as much rope, snatch straps and chain as you can and have it laid out ready to go, tyres down to about 6-8lb, hook on and go, do not let your vehicle stand still for more that 20 seconds, after each attempt steer a new track so you don't run over the same ground twice. IF no luck after two goes forget it, its not going to come and the risk to your vehicle is too great.

Wed, 2015-05-20 21:34

I had this situation the other week Tony when a 4WD was bogged to the axles up the beach and he wanted me to pull him out. Sorry mate you're too far past the hard stuff, wasn't risking mine for a clown that can't see where not to drive on the beach (was his missus driving actually) The tide was coming in so I sent my boys and their  mate to help dig him out. They had more of a clue than him and got him out, earned a little pocket money out of it too.

Have to agree with that

Wed, 2015-05-20 21:02

You should not put yourself or your vehicle in real danger.
I'd do as much as carnarvonite says then if it doesn't come out, sorry but that's as much as I can do for you mate.

Thu, 2015-05-21 09:42

Easter down at Broke Inlet can be like that with cars trying to get around to the far side.We set up camp close by have the snatch straps out ,set up the chairs and wait for the fun to begin.Oh yeah it cost a ctn to pull anybody out.Can be quite lucrative. LOL

unfortunate really...if i was in that situation i would have waited until high tide before launching...or dumped the boat in the sand and waited for the water to come in lol. its cases like these we need a beach recovery hovercraft . im guessing they were too remote to get a tractor or a loader?

would have made an amesome meme to have a boat infront of the utes with a snatch strap attached lol

carnarvonite - do u steer a new track each attempt because its soft and u dont want to end up dragging your axels? i always thought it was good to do several runs back and forth to compact the sand...i guess it depends how soft n wet it is though? probably end up sinking instead of compacting??

Soft underneath

Sun, 2015-05-24 17:36

The reason is that you don't want to break through the hard crust and into the soft stuff underneath. Drive on it once and you will see cracks where the tyres have been, drive twice and risk going through. It has about 6 inches of sand covering 20 feet of black mud, once you go through its game over.

Its about 80km from town, a long way to drive a tractor or loader down to risk the same thing happening to it.
