New WA Record Blue Weighed
Submitted by dodgy on Thu, 2013-03-14 21:48
Just been weighed this evening in Exmouth at Gamex.
As reported on EGFC facebook page....
NEW STATE RECORD BLUE MARLIN!!! Congrats to Mark McKay and all the crew on Blue Horizon for their pending new state all tackle record Blue Marlin which weighed 354.5kg on 60kg line (the previous record was 330.1kg). Poor Peter Anderton has the job of filleting this one again after the earlier 200kg fish. Again all of this fish is being trucked to Perth to feed the homeless

That's a serious fish!
That's a serious fish!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Neither am I
But we/I dont know the story. I would think that a monster like that on 60lb would probably be totally shagged by the time it gets to the boat. Also would be an old fish at that size.
I dont like trophy fish, but unless we know the chain of events there is no point saying anything IMO.
I have no problem with taking a Billie if it cant be revived. Better than letting it drop to the floor and feed more sharks.

Im with you
I much prefer the video of the guys on Mahi Mahi 3 deciding to cut it lose rather than keep. But this big blue could have been stuffed. It was on 60 Kilo not 60lb:) i bet the angler was stuffed too!

the bigger the tackle the
the bigger the tackle the more likely you have a chance at reviving it....if you fought a fish like that one 24 or 15 it would fight till near death and i assume would a death dive as one last run........
No issue with killing the odd marlin here or there if there is justifiable cause for it...(record., died boat side, couldnt revive it properly etc etc), My first blue died boat side as it was caught live baiting 4-5 kg mack tuna.......

Great effort by all
Great effort by all involved, there are some donkeys out there this year thats for sure.
As for not releasing it, one or two fish weighed every year isnt going to worry the stocks too much and the info learned is invaluable. Just seeing these bigger fish and being better able to judge the size of the ones you release is worth it.
Off for a coffee now :-)

Dont know what its like to
Dont know what its like to eat.. big fish and a record, well done to the crew. Whats the dif between taking a 20kg Dhu or a big Marlin if its going to be eaten? or is it more of an issue that the fish was take for a record then donated for food??

The difference is a marlin this size may be 8/9 years old
Yet a 20 kg dhu will be in the 30s or 40s.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

It is estimated that a marlin around 400kg (1000lb) would be at least 35 years old and a 350kg would be around 20 years old!

Facebook comments report
Facebook comments report they tried for half an hour but the fish couldnt be revived.
While I personally do not take cirtain species they can die on you, in which case caring for the flesh and making use of it is the best course.
Another way to look at it is that is that it is well within the anglers rights to take thier bag, billfish are fairly well protected from rec fishing with a bag limit of 1, many other species with individual and boat limits could theoreticly be hammered far worse than billfish if everyone took everything they were allowed by law.

I am up here at the moment
I am up here at the moment and the numbers of billfish are massive as per the sheer amount of fish tagged and released this week. Some are going to release better than others just like dhuies that don't release so well aswell. I don't think I could kill the fish for a record I understand that if it didn't want to release at least it went to a good cause instead of shark fodder

WA has this bullshit idea
WA has this bullshit idea that every marlin has to be released and any body who brings one is keelhauled for it.
As stated duefish, snapper, balchin, breaksea are all slow growing fish (some in excess of 40 yrs) yet most boat fishos take hundreds of them a year each.
90% of game fisherman will release all the fish they catch, the exception being - Record - Points - Death or combination of all three.
The marlin Bag limit is 1 per day.
So no rules where broken, fish was/is being eaten, 100's of people got to see a magnificent fish, of which most will never get the opportunity to see.
Not to mention the infomation that can be learnt from the skeletal remains. Grow- rate- age etc.
So where is the problem ? last year Gamex 103 marlin "TAGGED AND RELEASED" this year is set to smash that record and as far as i know 2 have been wieghed in- hardly a slaughter of stocks.
We caught a 198kg Blue last month when it surfaced it was as dead as a dodo -Stiff dead- now this is the stupid part we where acually going to just let it sink to the bottom for crab food because of the taboo subject of bringing billfish in but we then decided, no F#@k it where taking it in knowing full well that we would cop the whole "you should of let go bullshit". So we took it in and done all the short length, girth measurements for reseach. by the time we had got to the ramp there was a army waiting for a look, then it started, and we had to justify how and why we brought it in.
This is the exact reason i didn`t post a photo on here,(yet im sure many would like to see it) just not worth the Hassle of explaining it AGAIN and AGAIN.
So for all the knocker's out there - if you understood the time effort and money that goes into catching these Magnificent fish and that most 98% of them are released
(103 tagged - 2 wieghed) you would give credit where credit is due.
Mark Mckay and the crew of Blue Horrizon well done and an Awsome effort!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers Boomer

Great fish
Boys did everything they could do to try and revive her , can't ask more than that ,we would have taken it as well in the same position , we got a solid 250 fish but she was in great condition and swam off nicely , but we were only hooked
up for an hour , that's the diff , congrats again to the Team on Blue Horizon , considering the circumstances they were fishing under .
Just one more cast , honest !!!

That,s a beast of a fish...
Congratulations on an awesome capture and good luck with the claim.
Each to their own on release or keep. As long as no laws are being broken.
I am sure that crew would be to stoked to give a s@#t about anyone elses opinion anyway.
I don't think that anyone should have to justify their decission either way in regards to this.

well done to the crew. would
well done to the crew. would have been an epic battle to bring that one in. pity it wouldnt revive but as mentioned it is going to feed a lot of people. i have no probs when it comes to taking a fish like that if it cant be revived, better than letting it sink especialy when they are of a good eating nature.
of corse it would be nice to see a fish like that swim off after the fight but it doesnt always go to plan.
