Next project coming along nicely - new bait tank / table

I wanted to improve my live bait set up, which until now has been a 60 l solo bin on the back deck with an externally mounted bilge pump.  Came across a combo bait tank / table on line and found someone locally to make one up (that person can identify themselves if they wish or remain anonymous ).  And it's progressing nicely!

In the meantime I am installing a stainless steel skin fitting, stopcock and bait tank pump under the tiller flat.  This will also provide a pick up for the deck wash.

Will post more pics as it progresses.

Mon, 2014-11-10 20:46

Round two.  Have used grease and finger tightened the skin fitting so I can position it to make sure the stop cock is operational when I tighten it all up.  Have tick marked the position of the skin fitting against the hull so that when I sika flex it tomorrow, my "second" pair of hands can hold it in the right position while I hand tighten the nut on the inside...

Will be great for catching a few whiting, herring or squid on the way out for live / fresh bait, or at monkey mia we catch some butteries which the black snapper love and I have caught cobia and cod on livies there before.  It will also be great to throw the crabs in to keep nice and fresh on a long day crabbing. :)

Bought some of the plumbing requirements today from whitworths and located an ideal Teflon chopping board at a store "cut it out" in the city.  I will need two of those.

Hmmmmm

Tue, 2014-11-11 19:42

Stainless on aly, the 2 dont like each other. Dont like the chances of water being drawn when on the plane with that fitting. I would have welded an aly tube in, have the end cut at say a 30 degree angle facing forward so the water is forced in when underway and have it spill in at the top of the tank, will aerate and not drain back. Have the tank spill out the back to maintain a level and put a bung or 2 to drain it. Basically Im just describing the design of a Barcrusher's live bait tank setup, go into All Boats and suss it out. And another thing, is that cracks I see in your hull?

Tue, 2014-11-11 19:56

I have put plenty of sika flex in between the fitting and the hull.  There will be a 1890 litre per hour pump above the stop cock pulling the water up.  If that skin fitting doesn't work I will go for the forward facing scoop type.  And I'm not sure which cracks you're seeing???

Tue, 2014-11-11 20:28

Can nearly guarantee that skin fitting wont work. We had one the same on our tank and above 6 or 7 knots there is too much turbulence for the pump to pickup water. I`d be changing it now before you get too much done and have to pull too much apart.

Tim, I checked out those 'cracks'.  I think what you're seeing there are aluminum filings from cutting the hole through the hull.  Definitely no cracks there.

Because I wanted a stop cock

Tue, 2014-11-11 20:04

Because I wanted a stop cock incorporated my only options were brass, plastic or stainless.  Brass is a bigger no-no than stainless and I wasn't happy with a lack of strength and wear and tear on the plastic option.  So it is stainless with lots of sika flex....

Take three - skin fitting...

Wed, 2014-11-12 20:07

Bought the scoop style skin fitting and fitted it tonight.  Scoop facing forward :).  Plenty of sika flex and everything is only hand tightened at the moment.  I'll give the sika flex a day or two to set and then tighten the nuts up as tight as I can, giving a good seal on the sika flex.

Yeah.  I thought a lot about it.  Never keen to drill a hole into an otherwise sealed tank, but in the end the pump I want to install is designed to fit into a stop cock not be mounted on the outside of the transom.  So I have gone the internal solution with a good strong stainless steel skin fitting and stop cock.

Wed, 2014-11-19 22:28

Getting together my bits and pieces ready for the next visit to the workshop.  Bought two solid chopping boards, these will get cut down to size, one for the lid and the other fixed.  The basket is from my existing bait table.  One skin fitting will be for a drain for the table, the other to facilitate water to the tank.  A bung to empty the tank at the end of the day, and some elbows that will attach high on the rear for tank overflow drainage.  Last of all a hand pump that will feed from the external pickup on the transom.  The latter for the benefit of my wife and scalie fishing mate's who still insist on using bait! Hinges and a few more fastenings to come.  And the black screw in attachment will be the deck wash attachment to the live bait tank pump.

Fri, 2014-12-26 19:50

 Are my calculations right?

the pump capacity is 500 gallons / hour = 1892 litres / hour = 31.5 litres / minute.

Therefore a 40 litre live bait tank will refresh it's water content every 75 seconds????

Tue, 2014-12-30 18:57

First day out today after fitting the pump.

most importantly, no leaks! always a good start to the day when the boat doesn't sink at the ramp....

Secondly, live bait tank pump and deck wash pick up water while stationary.

last of all, live bait tank pump picks up and pumps water at speed, and deck wash operates at speed without impacting on the water flow into the bait tank.

(now to finish and fit the tank / table)....
