old douglas craft 2nd hand, transom issue

hello every one

Me and my mate have recently bought an old 4.5 metre Douglas craft from a dealer in balcatta and its been great so far! although we had checked thoroughly at the yard when we bought it, I have just found out today that the transom is in a terrible state. after peeling back some of the flaky glass inside the boat were the transom is I saw that water had definitely got into the wood...wasn't a big deal as the wood was solid in these parts, but closer to the center of the transom it gets much worst, I am able to slide a Stanley knife all the way to glass on the other side! anyway my question is, were do I stand here? should I take the boat back and make the salesman responsible or is it tuff luck and fix it myself? any guidance would be much appreciated

Depends

Travis,

It all depends on how recently is 'recently'. I would imagine there is a warranty on the boat but nonetheless, the way our consumer affairs works is that if the product you purchased is not capable of doing the job it is supposed to, ie. performing as a power boat, then the seller has to rectify the problem or refund your money. So yes, I would be taking the boat back to him and making him do what he is required to do by the law.

thanks david, it definitely works as a boat im just worried the transom will crumble when we are 30km out at sea. I rang the salesman and he basically said a boat as old as this one all they can guarantee is the motor and all the elements with the motor. there is no warranty really. he did say bring it in and show him but nothing about actually fixing it other than putting some aliminium plates on the inside of the boat. I ended up doing that myself aswell as glassing the whole transom. :)

From your description the transom is stuffed and needs replacing, pretty easy to do yourself particularly if your capable of glassing the transom over - plenty of you tube vids to show you how.

As for warranty don't take the dealers word that there is none (though it may be the case) and contact consumer affairs ASAP

Paul is right, but as you have already tried to fix it you may have provided them with an easy "out".
Was anything mentioned about the condition of the hull when it was purchased?

Have a go at them, but ultimately if you are a bit handy as it sounds you'll end up better by doing it yourself than having them bodge it up as cheap as possible.
Maybe you can get them to supply resin or that transom bog designed for those sort of repairs as a settlement?
