Im not ashamed to admit i cant swim, nearly drowned in swimming lessons one time at school and never got into it again.

Cant swim to save my life, but put a wettie and snorkle and mask on an i can paddle with the best of them. Or at least i could, last time i went diving was in 1984 i think , lol. We'll see this summer , bought a wettie at the boat show.

Bulk floaties
lol Mako, no need for the floaties coz i only paddle now with kids in 3ft of water, and in summer the wettie should do the job. Was quite full on with the free diving when i was MUCH younger so looking forward to trying it again . Will be taking it very steady for a while like i said its been a looong time between dives.

Swimming
Each to their own but I'm glad I can swim when I'm out wide on the briny. Whether or not I could swim to shore or an island to save my life would depend on quite a few factors though.
Good to have lifejackets handy but in the real world sometimes you don't get an opportunity to put one on.

yeah agree there john, its something i have always wanted to do, just got to make sure, lol book myself into swim classes i think.
Being a good swimmer sometimes gives people that edge that sometimes can get them into trouble too, besides being 30odd mile out, i couldnt see anybody wanting to swim that distance

unbelievable
Go and start getting some lessons or just practicing down the doggy pool, good chance it will save your life one day. Thats why I always carry fins in the tinny, no matter how far from land I am, I reckon I could probably make it... eventually... :)

One of my friends complained that my tinny didn't have oars in case of an emergency but you do have to wonder sometimes ... on the weekend down at wrights bank/cape naturaliste , there was a very strong wind blowing us inshore, but the driftsock was pulling us out to sea @ 1.2kn

non swimmers
My old man cant swim and has been fishing in boats all over the uk and australia for over 35 years.
I get a little nervous when he comes out with me!
I have a 5 and 3 year old and theres no way i would take them offshore until they can swim properly.
My 5 yr old comes out into the sound and river but always has on a life jacket. More important to be calm and confident in the water so you can at least float and not panic until help comes.
Fishing isn't a matter of life or death, it's much more serious than that!!!
