Was using the first batch of salted mulies I've done and boy are they good you get so many casts out of them compared to fresh ones

Salted Mulies.....

Sat, 2013-05-18 14:10

Get a bag of pool salt. A block of Mulies. A plastic tub twice as deep as Mulies are and a smidge wider and longer than Mulies block. One third fill tub with salt, take plastic off Mulies and put them into tub on top of salt, cover Mulies with salt to thickness of meow than an inch. Go and have a Scotch, or Beer. Leave tub in shade for a while.

Within one hour the Mulies should be able to be prised off the block, any that don't come off without damage are to be left a little longer. Tha sepearated Mulies need covering with salt again so the whole set up is covered. This is the moment to be fussy about the Mulies being straight. Eventually al the Mulies will be sepearated and will have had four or more hours covered in salt.

The time to be covered in salt depends upon how tough you want the Mulies to be. I suggest starting off with half the block in for four hours, then the next quarter in for eight hours and then the last quarter over night. From this you will have a great enough spread of toughness to decide what you want. It's a bit like pussy, fresh more appealing than old salted ones ;) .

When a group of Mulies are tough enough for you put then in bags for the freezer, remembering to add a little salt with each group. Put them in the freezer for use when you need them. If you care for them next fishing session unused Mulies will be good enough for another session. I have tried to make unused Mulies go four and five sessions but don't get fish biting at them in the end.

With the salt, you can drain the fluid off the bottom of the tub ........... Don't ever put it on lawn you want to grow again. Some people have been known to tip it down the septic vent point, Each to there own. Place the tub in full sun to dry out the remaining salt, it is reusable.

So far I've salted them for

Sun, 2013-05-19 08:50

So far I've salted them for two weeks and they are reasonably dry.  No problems with the fish not liking them caught just as many fish yesterday as fresh mulies but I would have got five times more casts out of them as they stay on the hook great. Going to try and store them dry in a air right container outside and hopefully they will keep

I've cut a corner of a 15L water drum and taken the bung out to use to make them.  Just sit the drum on an angle over abucket to let the juice run out and you have a handle on the drum to carry it if it need to be move

Master baiter all of these were caught 5m from the shore surprisingly close. I just bait cast an wunweighted Mulie... lead equals snags in rocks
