ok first up. welcome to the site. well done on the release of the flattie as you werent sure, most would have kept it . pity you got one of them norwesters they are a pain in the preverbial. there are fish out there but generally you need to hve a look around to see what others are catching, if its herring and gardies then the surface fishing is the go. you do get skippy and whiting along the north side . it also depends on what part of the mole your fishing from. down at the rous head cafe is where a lot fish for herring and the likes. going out towards the end you can get into the bonito when they are about and even pick up the odd pinky in the right time of year.one thing to remember is its not always about catching fish(altho it is great) its about relaxation. keep an eye on this site and you will pick up a lot of good tips from the ones that fish from the stones all the time. good luck with future trips down there

Yeah Ive caught herring, gardies, whiting and small choppers from there, wouldnt mind gettin into the bonito.I get sick of catching small fish very easy, cant wait to get a boat and get out amongst it as I have a 24 kg stand up rod with a shimano torium loaded with 50lb braid that I never use. Cant wait for the rough weather so I can chase a few pinkys. Thanks for your tips mate

Welcome to the site mate, alot to learn from the forum!
First up, grab yourself a fish measure, either a free fisheries sticker one you can get from most tackle stores, or you can now get a Swivels Original fish measuring tape which are very convenient, can find them at most decent tackle stores. I'd be kicking myself if I find out I threw a sized fish back especially a flattie!

What is your light combo you use for the small fish? When I was younger I used to use an ugly stick and that was my light gear. When that got stolen I was recommended to buy a 1-3kg light graphite rod. With light line like 6lb all of a sudden catching small fish becomes fun again. mix it up with some lures and you're having a blast!
Good luck

Cheers Beau,my light rod is just a $25 special with 8lb line,it does the job,i mainly fish with my 2.00m 10-15kg rods with 25lb on them,so if I do hook a decent fish Im right.I will invest in one of them species guide measurers for sure. I catch and release a bit so it didnt really worry me about the flatty. Am gunna give the swanfish a crack this weekend aiming for a big flatty. Got a few new lures yesty so am looking forward to getting a decent tailor or salmon on em.I do fifo so I have 2 weeks of fishing time which is good.
