just after opinions on mig welders for small medium jobs around home and with cars
is gas or gassless better
should I buy a new cheapish one or secondhand good brand
I'm not intending to use it often, I just have a few jobs to tackle round home and would be handy to have one.
Any info appreciated

Depends what you mean by
Depends what you mean by cheap i guess. I wouldnt go past the lincoln powermig 180 but theyrr about $1000 from memory. Gas is always better but if they are small jobs you can always buy a disposable Argon bottle. Think most can do both gas and gassless, unless its a big job or lots of jobs it wouldnt be worth hiring a full size argon bottle.

Agree
Agree, i have many mig welders. As far as smaller models you cant go wrong with the Lincoln .
As for gassless welding it does take a bit to get used of, I think Bunnings now do gas bottles without the ussual rent issues .

cigweld
do a pretty good gas/gasless. Most of them these days are up
to scratch for general odd jobs around the home. Take the time to know your settings and you will get good results out of a lot of machines.
I bought a cheap ac/dc tig welder a few years ago (6 or more) and its still welds sound. Been using it to weld upto 8mm ali and just finished a chassis for a competition rock crawler that had to pass xray. Not a problem.

A good helmet.
Buy a good hemet as well. Automatic and fully adjustable. We have a cigweld one and makes welding a lot easier especially when learning.

Just don't buy a lincoln
Just don't buy a lincoln helmet. I've been through two of them in the last year. The batteries run out quite quikly, I've tried to give Gentronics feed back bit they are not interested. I've got a cheapie at the moment and it shits on the Lincoln helmets. As for the welders plenty of resonable cheap model migs which is all you'll need if only for hobby jobs. But I would personally get a gas one, easier to use.
Love the West!

My workers
My workers all use Speedglas, but that has more to do with keeping them all the same for replacement parts.
Personally I don't like them very much unless you go for the premium models.
I use Servoglas and find them very light to wear with little problems, but again don't go for the base models, jump up a grade or lens size.
Currently I use the 6000 model, it has a large lens and darker settings for TIG welding. It also has a grinding function instead of the flip up design, which just adds weight to the helmet.

hiderok flip top
love my old hiderok, can kick it, throw it, mistreat it and at worst replace a lense. I use it for all TIG & Stick and use my adflo ( airfed speedglass) when I'm welding flux core, iron powders, gasless and in confined space.
