November Sailfish in Exmouth Gulf
Submitted by Ewan on Mon, 2006-10-16 13:03
Gday all,
Can anyone out there confirm a little rumour I heard that Sailfish are thick in Exmouth Gulf towards November...? My old man is catching barra at the moment at Borroloola, making his way back to Perth soon...I want to get him into a sail-from-a-tinny!
How was that 42kg spaniard they got up there lately? that was monstrous...
Cheers all! enjoy the spring!

Yeah that spaniard was
Yeah that spaniard was bloody impressive. Not sure about the sails though. I thought it would be a bit late in the season but I'm not the expert on sailies.

Yep
You're on it Ewan. I remember when Gribbo was up there for Billfish Bonanza last November and he said that the sails were in the gulf in big numbers smashing up baitballs. Would love to get up there for the bonanza this year but just don't think I'm going to be able to do it. Hope he gets into a few!

Only just a touch over 5 months to go mate and we will be back there.
Make sure your old man takes a camera if he does go out there!

Yes, Gulliver, looking forward to it very very much!! oh beautiful warm water, sunsets, Cape Range, BILLFISH!!! i love that place at that time...
Gull I reckon if we were under water with your big gun trying for pelagics and a spaniard like that one went past you, you would **** yourself!! and I'd be there to film it :-) actually I reckon I'd be packing it too! I was up at the Rowleys a few weeks ago, snorkelling with a big potato cod, i was filming and it seemed to like its reflection in the lens or something, it would cruise right up, straight towards me without any hint of slowing down, twas most unnerving to have the bucket mouth of a big fish like that about 20cm from your eye! Imagine the fangs on that spaniard!! heeheeee!
thanks Adam, I'll check out the Bonanza - is that an Exmouth GF Club event?
Do you know whereabouts in the Gulf they hang out? I'm assuming its out towards the Muirons...or is it further down into it? there is always heaps of bait out in the tidal currents towards the islands, I guess the billies would hit them there?
Cheers!

Hey Ewan
I certainly ain't no expert and only going on what I've heard, but they seem to gather out around the mackie lumps, which I think is pretty close to being inline with norwest reef out in the middle of the gulf. Billfish bonanza is mid November and run by EGFC, they had their circle hook competition on last weekend so there should be reports filtering through soon on how the billies faired. Did hear something about Matt Gates getting into 5 sails or something, still waiting to be confirmed.
Hope you guys are able to get into some of the quality fish you did last time, that dvd still makes me go all warm and fuzzy on the inside!

**** myself hey, not a chance mate!!
My bazooka would make short work of a mackie like that and you know it. Would just depend if I could hang on and whether you lot could keep up with the boat - haha.
Bring it on mate I am up for the challenge and yes I will even let you film it. Then it will be your turn :0
We will be underwater again soon Woolfy - and have even found another guy who is keen as to come. Two Rocks would be a good one I reakon.
