NZ south isalnd trout fishing

Was reading an old Western Angler mag that had a great article on Trout fishing in some of the rivers in south island NZ. Looked awesome. Was wondering a couple of things...firstly, can you spin with lures in these rivers and secondly, when would be the best time to go?

Any info on the topic would be great

I used to live in christchurch, new zealand.
I never thought much of the trout fishery, I used to go for salmon in the waimakarriri and rakaia rivers.
The salmon get pretty big in there, we used to spin metal spoons in there for them.
Using this method also picks up sea run trout, but I never personally got one.
For the upper reaches of the rivers, mid to late summer is best. For river mouths/lower reaches, late summer through to early winter.
I never fished the rivers during winter.

Where abouts on the south island are you headed?

Yes you can spin in most

Yes you can spin in most rivers.

The best time for spinning would be spring when the whitebait are on the move. Concentrate on river deltas and lower reaches

The best thing about SI fishing is stalking big trout in clear water. They are tricky to catch and pretty much anything other than a well presented fly will spook the hell out of them and anything else within the general vicinity.

Spring time just after the

Spring time just after the snow melts and the rivers flow slows down.  Casting rapala CD's in trout colours will catch you heaps of both brown and rainbows.  Sea run fish pull hard and are real suckers to catch.  Would be easy to catch 10 fish in an afternoon.

I was fishing around Pelorus, Blenheim -too easy.
