O K guys and girls. Here is a Question for you all

I have just had my boat looked at by a boat repair and sales yard in Belmont .I asked them to look at the leg as there is some grinding noises coming from it as well as looking at the carby to see if they could help with the flat spot when taking off. They found that the noise was coming from the gymbal bearing and the uni joint was u/s (their words).as far as the carby goes they said that the whole motor set up was illegal as its a car motor and a normal car carby as well as car engine parts on it, plus said that we need to replace the whole motor. they wouldnt work on it anyway as its over 5 years old. So here are the facts. Yes the motor is a 350 chev . yes it does run a standard carby , fuel pump/filter, water pump and other standard motor bits and thats where it stops as the motor has all the correct cooling (heat exchanger) , exhaust set up and had been set up to run in a boat by Chev Power when we bought it. Since then we have had the boat surveyed  (motor, leg and hull) for insurance purposes and nothing has been said by anyone in regards to being illegal. We have had the boat now for 5 years and i feel if it was illegal we would have known by now..................The question for you all is, Is there a legal and illegal way to set up this motor in a boat , taking into account the motor was put into the boat by a top class marine mechanic after Chev Power set the motor up for marine use. let us know either way. not going to change it because 1 mechanic said so , just curious on others thoughts about it

sounds odd there ... second

sounds odd there ... second quote maybe for a diff company thats not trying to sell you a $30k motor and leg (cause thats what its going to cost) .. without knowing the full specs id be a little annoyed .. the merc 350 is really only a car 350 with more clearance in the internals to deal with the lower running temps and a flame restrictor instead of a air filter ..

Give Jay Chandler a ring

Give Jay Chandler a ring from Chandler Marine 0407428438.

He has converted many chev motors to marine motors and runs a 350 chev in his own boat.

Sounds like you got it sorted. Great news. Nothing like a dodgy mechanic to take away some of your hard earned cash.

hi russ a mate of mine i

Sun, 2010-06-20 18:28

hi russ

a mate of mine i prawn with reg has got a 24ft sundowner with by the sounds of it ,the same setup as you.

he had it repaired at the same shop i think you are talking about with nothing said, maybe on the day he just didnt want to know about it.

all in all, i would not think this is elligal as there would be hundreds of these setups out there and as said they are based on the standard 350 anyway.

i imported a ski boat with the 350 chev and the only differance between that and a car engine was the exuast and the flame retarder as the air cleaner, other wise nothing, it was even running the standard water pump.

the guys at chev power have been doing this for a very long time so even they would know the rules you would think

go back on another day and you will get another answer.

like you say, its insured like that so you have got no problems

good luck

yeah i know what your

Sun, 2010-06-20 21:17

yeah i know what your saying. but yeah , there is minimal diff between a boat 350 and car 350 , only cooling and exhaust from what i have seen and heard. maybe he just didnt want to do the work as the leg is old and he just bullsh#@ed about it being illegal. his loss, no more money from me for him

chivers marine

Sun, 2010-06-20 20:17

i have just started an apprenticeship at chivers marine doing mechanics and that does'nt sound quite right. we get a few 350's come in and they do run car parts because they are a car motor. sounds like this guy wanted to make some dough out of you ;)
