Ocean Reef boat harbour
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2008-05-08 11:21
I am thinking of heading down to Ocean Reef boat harbour to toss a line in. Has anyone had much experience fishing there.
I am wondering if the best spots are on the end of the main wall or the smaller wall.
I am also wondering if that little groyne just to the north is worth a try?
Any input would be appreciated,
Many thanks, Colin Hay

If you happen to see fish
If you happen to see fish jumping out of the water inside the marina. Dont even bother trying for them. Spent an hour trying to catch the little buggers when we were there last time to no avail, and they were only a meter from the shore if that. Darn frustrating i tell ya.
Back to topic. We have fished the wall that faces south a few times and have had no luck, but have heard the best place is along the front wall of the marina and fishing into the ocean.

It looks like a good spot. Might give it a crack this afternoon.

those fishes that are jumping are mullets....
if u wan to catch them use dough on a small hook with no weight and cast towards them ...they take it.... hmmm at the end of the south wall is good but it is dangerous to walk all the way out there ...
good luck colin...
wat are u planning to chase?

Thanks kaitan.
We got so frustrated that they wernt taking the bait. We thought they were herring, but now we know they were mullet and dont really like bait. Makes us feel not so stupid that we couldnt catch them lol

Tailor and Salmon Troy
Tailor mainly. But with today's reports of a big, hungry school of salmon off the coast from Mindarie I am hoping some of those beauties might head inshore looking for my bait.
What do you mean when you say it is a dangerous walk on the wall Troy?
I have been looking at the google satellite and there are some interesting looking spots just north of the marina.
They certainly look like good tailor spots. If I have time I might give them a try.
Mullet on dough. Brings back memories of making up dough recipes with garlic powder and cotton wool.

Rough going
It is a rough walk along the rocks to walk further up after the little jetty. not a simple one anyway in the dark. Can be productive though on a good day. Good luck Colin

With no wind blowing
I decided to give Ocean Reef a miss and decided to try a plan to fish the near the lighthouse at Hillarys to take advantage of the outgoing tide.
Didn't catch the tailor I was hoping for but managed two decent skippy, three tarwhine, two squid and a scaly mackeral. Not bad in two hours.
Anyone looking for scaly mackeral might find that spot. It is certainly worth a try just after dark. A sizeable school came up my burley trail and milled around for quite a long time.
Unfortunately I didn't have any small hooks and only managed to jag one, which I put out as a live bait. Despite all the activity, nothing came along to eat my scaly unfortunately. But then again, I was only there for a short time and the action may have increased a bit later in the night.
All the best, Colin Hay

Hi Ya, Haven't been to
Hi Ya,
Haven't been to Ocean Reef for a long time. Before the govt extended the drain further out to sea, you used to be able to drive out near the south west corner. You could keep an eye on your car then. That was the best spot for all sorts of things. But with parking now up the top only, an over zealous inspector that will put a fine on a tin can lying on the ground next to the bin, and a reputation for vehicle breakins in the top car park, I don't go there now.
Cheers.

I know this is a 8 year old
I know this is a 8 year old thread, but I just wanted to add this in here for anyone else that might be wondering if the Ocean Reef Boat Harbour is any good to fish these days.
I went fishing there a few months ago, probably around April. We went there at night, and the swell was massive, waves were constantly smashing over the rocks and getting us soaked. We were on the wall that was facing South towards Hillarys, just before the bend.
We got nothing for the first few hours, but near the end of the night, at around 11pm, we started to get runs almost every few minutes. They felt like decent fish, we thought they were school mulloway. We got at least 10 hook ups within a few hours, and all of the fish felt like decent ones, but sadly every time we got the fish in next to the rocks, it would break off on the rocks, and we didn't get a look at any of the fish because of how rough the water was. All we know is that they were good fish.
So if you plan to fish in the same spot, I recommend using line that doesn't break easily on rocks, and having a very long gaff on hand.
Cheers
