Octopus pots

A mate and I are trying to make octopus pots. We have purchased some PVC pipes, but do not know how we can weigh them down and keep them from moving. We are land based and looking for ways to get some octopus. Also any information on what type of ground octopus like and how to set the traps would be greatly appreciated.

 Hey mad fisherboy

My mate has a commercial license to catch occies, has about 80 pots.

Most of his he has made from one piece of pvc joined to a piece of the old terracota (clay) pipe to hold it down. about 100mm concrete in the end

Our design

Wed, 2015-12-02 13:58

Old school now, but the way a mate and I made them was:

1. Cut two lengths of 90mm PVC pipe around 800mm long

2. Put 2 bolts through the middle so you end up with the PVC side by side, with a ring welded on 1 of the bolts

3. Make up a plug so that concrete can be poured into the middle 150mm of the PVC.  This is your weight.

That gives you 4 chambers.  We made quite a few of these and put 4 of them on a length of rope.

Never used floats....need to know where it is set and grapple it up

Thanks for all the replies. Just wondering what sort of locations we should be putting the traps one? E.g sand or rocky structures.

We usually set ours on weed

We usually set ours on weed banks but rocky broken ground should hold em too it's all about convienice for us to pick up fresh bait on the way out fishing. Up north we just used to walk shallow reefs on low tide and yank em out of the coral

I've never seen ocky inside the 100's of pvc pipes I've seen out there. They seem to prefer stone or terracota.

Warnbro sound

Mon, 2015-12-07 08:44

Ive got about ten 600mm lengths of terracotta pipe in Warnbro sound along a weed bed in about 2m of water.

Just anchor on my gps mark and swim for them. never gone home empty handed.

I work away so only check them once a month.

You could do it from shore just need to find a spot they will generaly hang around.

The rock wall to gerden island used to be a good spot plenty of crabs for them to eat.
