Offshore Tailor

Wondering if anyone can give me some advise on targeting Tailor on the reef breaks along Murray reef Mandurah to Warnbro. I have tried a couple of times trolling lures and casting surface lures and mulies but not come across any.  I usually target snapper at sunrise, and my Tailor attempts have been after this a little later in the morning (hour or so after sunrise).

when targeting Tailor land based I have always focused my efforts around the sunrise/sunset period. Is it worth targeting them on inshore reefs durin the day or am I wasting my time?

Dont be afraid to try anytime

Dont be afraid to try anytime on them reefs. The fish dont just go away, they will still hit lures, its in their nature. Iv gotten tailor from my little reef up near Hillarys marina on the way in at 11-midday, and even along the beaches up further, I love trollin up tailor and makin a scene when beach fishos are packin up mid to late morning haha. When i find them, they seem to always be at the same spots on the reef so just gota find the honey pot, not always whitewater

I have caught three in my life. One was trawling whitebait in 3m of water at lunchtime, one was casting a Halco Hamma at sunset and one was mid morning casting a plug at an offshore reef.

Take from that at you will haha

Try along the outer reefs of safety bay, from Long Point to Pt peron. Lots of fish along there. I like high tides. Time of day doesnt seem to matter for them offshore

Always laugh

Wed, 2014-07-09 21:40

The stretch of beach I target always get comments like, never get tailor in the day. Then I walk back past with a 65cm and laugh. As tim-o said, find the spot on the reef as sometimes only hole up there. If fishing whitewash time the cast to land as the water begins to clear. Be on the look out for baitfish and mullet and cast around them too as the tailor will stalk them. Try sinking lures as well as surface during the day.

My advice would be to troll shallow diving minnows like the x-rap saltwater in the white water behind reefs. The more wter you cover the higher your chances of catching a fish. Like tim-o said if you catch one troll back over the same spot a few times, got a good chance of catching more. Also I find that they like a bit of swell so generally 2-3m swells have worked well for me.
