Oh no- not again

Wobby again, same pot and 3 crays in the pot again. Still not ready to try fillet them yet

Link to a little video showing 2 of the crays in the pot https://youtu.be/a6FIlxbct6s

At least ended up with 8 size crays for our trouble. Definitely taking them out tomorrow in what looks like possible glass off conditions

Them things certainly aren't easy to fillet.  Tried once and just about killed the knife. Never again. At least you got a feed of roaches

Not too bad

Mon, 2021-03-15 20:21

Hi Russ. All in all we have done better on Reds than on whites. We have been getting some every pull. Never the big numbers that are possible with whites but it has been very consistent. Cheers

r u using some fresh bait

Mon, 2021-03-15 22:24

r u using some fresh bait with blood in it ??

wobbys always seem to like a bit of blood in the bait and fresh mullet, herring etc or frames will drag them in every time ,,

My first cray season I used

Mon, 2021-03-15 23:47

My first cray season I used fresh bait and it was wobbly city. A bloke asked to borrow my knife to fillet a wobby once and he got all offended when I said no and told him why, he got a knife off someone else and hacked away for an hour to try and prove a point!

Hezzy and Pete

Hezzy and Pete are spot on, freeze your bait before adding it to your pot. Freezing breaks down some of the protiens that attract wobbies. We once sold a tonne of freshly caught salmon to pro crayfishermen at Hamelin Bay, next day they reported that every single pot had one, two and sometimes three wobbies in every pot.

Filleting them is easy if you do as Pete suggested, make a hole and cut from the inside out. Split down from where its vent used to be [after gutting of course and don't waste time cutting the fins off because it doesn't do anything] down to the base of the tail then work your way around both sides.  rip the breast bones out then out comes the spine and you are ready to cut off you fillets

With wobbies, the bigger they are the better eating they are, small ones are tough chewing

 Haha I was doing everything

Wed, 2021-03-17 05:20

Haha I was doing everything I could to avoid getting bit, I had a cray snare on the dinghy used that to get it out then smacked him with a persuader, I was still worried about getting bit so gutted it and off with his head. The meat I got had 2 completely different textures when raw depending on where it came from I assumed but was lovely and white would eat again for sure. I must admit probably not much meat on the one in the photo.
