Old merc mechanic needed !!!

Hi there, can anyone recomend a good out board mechanic, that knows the old stuff ???

i have a very old boat that i got off a mate for a good deal, with a 55 mariner ( i recon some where about mid 70'S model ? )

However its hard to start and floods easy, i have taken it down to a dealer in Yangebup and spent nearly 400 for them to fix it, But its exactly the same as when i took it in there, im not taking it back im well over them... ill just cut my losses ...

So if any one can recomend some one that knows what there doing, pref south of the river, it would be very much appreciated

Cheers

Hard to start, floods easily ; carburation needs set up/serviced.

see below.

These  2 stroke engines are NOT hard to set up/maintain/repair yourself.

Need a manual (cheap to get with internet, just print out what part you are doing is the easiest), or buy one.

 You need some (good) tools.

Take your time preparing, reading up, if you have not touched one before.

Start with servicing the carburators in a propper way, this is where most of the time the problem is.

Make sure no false air can be sucked in by cracked hoses and rubber blocks, fuel lines.

Especially dirt and old oil deposits in venturies and jets blocking the correct operation of the fuel supply.

Check the floats (they are a common problem and need to be replaced when suspect.

Next is ignition set up. Here is where you definitly need a dial gauge (to find TDC) and the manual.

With new correct spark plugs. (check leads and sparkcaps for breakdown in insulation (start up in dark place is the easiest)

Check all wirring for broken away insulation and corroded connections.

Next is the fuel connection to the motor from the tank, another common problem fixed with new fitting if suspect.

The benefit of doing it is that you will know the motor inside out and peace of mind by doing it correctly/propperly.

good luck!

Às said above the old ones

Às said above the old ones are relatively easy to work on - if you are unsure (as I was a few years ago) the Carlisle TAFE run an extremely good course that shows you just how easy it all is.

Sounds like its flooding because it does not get away - Plugs/ignition are probably the culprit - although I would have thought the place that you have spent the dough at would have already gone down this path.

I used to know a guy in Woodvale, who was either a former owner or partner in Portside marine, who knows mercs inside out unfortunately I cannot recall his name. he fixed up my Mercury - tower of power - on an old boat a few years back in a jiffy where others failed.

If anyone knows this guy perhaps post.

Cheers

Boat dealer in Yangebup?

Sun, 2011-02-27 21:49

I live in Yangebup, a dealer here I,ve missed something. However I am assuming that you reside in the area as well. I could suggest you have a talk to Greg Hardy Powercruise marine 0418 928 588, his business is set up at Cockburn pleasure boat Storage, at Woodman point. I don't know what you are prepared to spend, but labour charges these days are $100/hr, so it dosn't take long to add up.

He does have years of experience on servicing all types of motors, as well as a cache of spare parts. If you have mechanical ability, tackeling the job yourself may be the way to go. I assume you have the worksheets from the company you took the motor to, what work did they do?

Cheers for the advice,yes i

Cheers for the advice,

yes i put new plugs in it 1st, then took it down and they stripped overhauled and repaired my carbys ??????

i actually brought a boat off them about 18 months ago and got serverly ripped off (being green i had no idea what i was looking at, it just looked good) there excuse was that it was on consinment so it wasnt there problem .... i just cut my losses on that also, and sold it .. i got my little boat from a mate for a trade in some work, and a spare engine, so as i said very good deal, when it starts and goes it goes really well.

I have been stuck out at night time in the sound (with a 9kg snapper and no ice) then i took it in to the same dealer, and was told they had a fantastic mechanic who was great on the older stuff, so i let them do it, forked out nearly 400, took it out at night and got stuck again and had to be towed in !!!!

So i might ring some of these blokes that have been suggested, so thanks heaps for the advice

mechanics/boatshops doing the wrong thing.

I am very sorry to hear this all to common dodgy deals done.

This is the reason why people who find a good mechanic stick to them.

Hopefully your boat will be running sweet again.
