Onslow fishing and mudcrabbing- help needed
Submitted by Mackdog tackle on Mon, 2026-04-20 07:48
Hey guys,
had a last minute shuffle of plans from Exmouth to Onslow for annual fishing trip so feeling a little unprepared. Heading up in a couple of days and looking for any pointers for Onslow? Assuming around Mackeral islands would be pretty smashed but how about the other smaller islands closer in to the east? Or best to head west to Long Island areas.
also seeking info for mudcrab options either hooking or drop netting..
appreciate any help
cheers

Just got back
Mudcrabs are in both creeks in town.
Beadon creek and 4 mile.
Tides do rip through so positioning is key.
If you can get to the creeks away from town you'll do better.
Fishing for macks is easy, just troll.
But rising tide pushing into areas with close contour lines does help.
You will need to sort through the 100s of mack tuna.
Bottom fishing is better out of the bay. You don't need to go deep.
Red Emps and Rankin are in 10m of water and less sharks.
Travel to the further islands for coral trout.

Fuel
I should probably mention the fuel situation.
There are 2 small sevos in town.
One has diesel and 91 but is limiting 50ltr per person for 91.
The other has diesel but the unleaded pumps are broken.
So, 2 choices, take heaps of fuel with you. (took 120ltr is jerry's).
Each person in the group goes to the servo to get your 50ltrs (as we did).
Drive 122km to Nanutara to get fuel (we did this too).
