Opinions on side console vs centre
Submitted by sea-kem on Wed, 2018-03-28 16:45
Righto fellas I'm getting close with my little project boat ( 4.75 Quintrex Bayhunter) It was a runabout but am changing it to either a side or centre console. It's pretyy well been a total rebuild, but being a milenium hull and in very good nick thought it was worth it. I'd like a few opinions on either, pros and cons. I won't put any pics up until she's together, I want to show from start to finish. I hope you'll be proud of what I've done here Gordon ;)

Well Andy
It really all depends on what you want to do with your new toy.
Will you be installing trim tabs ?
Are you going to be fishing one up most of the time ?
Do you want decent shade and rod storage ?
Sitting or standing whilst under way ?
A side console with a man of any decent stature will require balancing of the boat whilst under way .Hence the trim tab question . Yet a centre console will behave a little better when you’re one up .
I find that I’m a little biased as I’m running a well set up centre console with a bun load of sun protection ( Dolphin t top ) gives you heaps of sun shade without compromising the ability to chase a fish around the boat . Another plus is the oh shit grab rails .
Rod storage ?
I can get four rods up in the air above my head up out of harms way along with a solar panel and aerials, yet to see that on a side console . Both boats you’re going to get a wet arse on a sloppy day , yet with a centre console you can duck and cover ...:)
Storage ? You’ve seen the seat behind my console and that is a godsend for keeping stuff out of harms way yet quickly accessible when you need to get stuff . Centre consoles are a great place to keep your batteries midships and out of the wet . I could rabbit on all afternoon , but it’s time to get my beers out of the freezer..:) Looking forward to seeing you again on your way through to Gnaraloo
My two cents ......

Thanks Chris, some bloody good feedback. It will always be a two man operation. The only concerns I have with a centre is where do all the cables run? Especially the steering? Is it easy enough to get them secreted? Cheers

Andy, all steering and
Andy, all steering and electrical cabling usually run under the floor and up into the console. You dont need a very wide floor to hide everything if you dont already have one?
My vote for CC, easier to balance and stay a bit dryer.

Ive never understood side
Ive never understood side console but a mate of mine has one in Cairns and likes it as he says it opens up the other side for fishing, they pretty much only fish at night and with handlines though, alot different to perth.
rather be fishing

Fox on the money I have a quinni 5.2 top ender side console would love to change to a cc .solo side console heavy on console side but I do have big double batts on same side doesn't help one other on board sitting opposite to me levels boat out nice main advantage I get with side console is the extra room for drift fishing out the free side teds to free up a lot of deck space on small boat had both cc and sc would definitely go cc .

Centre is sounding the go.
Centre is sounding the go. And I guess in a smaller boat balance is key. I'm going to have the kill tank up front and whatever else. I've gotta say there's heaps of room on the little girl.

I prefer centre. Easier to stand up and take a few bumps with the knees. Side console is usually a sit down to drive helm setup.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

definetly centre console
especially if you fish on your own a lot. it`s a lot easier to balance a small boat
when your standing in the middle

Too easy
I used Flexi hose ( car wash vacuum cleaner hose ...:) for a conduit running from under the console . It runs straight from the console floor ( 200 mm above ) to up under the gunnel midships . From there it pops out the transom to the pod on the rear , fuel line is run in a seperate conduit ( 25mm pvc tubing ) . If you’re not running hydraulic steering you will need to run a larger diameter conduit. The big plus is the only gear running to the back of the boat is two battery leads , transducer cable and hydraulic steering line. Both batteries , col hersey switch and electrical gear is in the console reducing cable runs and keeping all electrical gear away from water sources .

Love my 520 sidey! As Vin
Love my 520 sidey! As Vin says, soo much room on the deck, you'll get sick of "squeezing" past the CC every time you move from the back to front, vice versa. Im 6'2 and stand and drive, never felt like ive had to sit down to drive the boat

Hi mate
I converted a savage kestrel a fews back to a side console - slightly smaller but my thinking over cc was
side console easier to install - I boxed my in to make a consolewhich had vertical rod holders on the front - engine/batt cables ran up the side of the boat.
if I was in the boat by myself it could still sit in the middle to drive - although not ideal the reality is there was almost always two of us on the boat - and with two sat side by side it was balanced - cant do that in a small cc
As others have said it frees up the deck area compared to a cc
all you need to do I suppose now is find a someone who is a decent alum welder.. :-)

CC and Side in one?
why not have a CC that can slide to the side if want it to?
You could have a floor board that fits on the side or the centre and just swap out the console and the board when you want to - with just a few bolts to undo.
Would just need to run extra length of cables for the controls, sounder, steering, etc and be able to move it one way or the other...
Then at least you can change it around with what you want to do ('activities' or fishing)...
there a few new boats with consoles that can move forwards or backward, so sideways should be an option to.

Side Console
Had a new polycraft centre consolde and liked it but was a tight squeeze around the console, have had large walk around as well which I really liked but so much work and too hard on my own.
Now I have a side console and its the most practical boat I have ever owned and so easy to tow. Got a fold up removeable bimini but havent used it. Rod storage is where ever you want it. Trim tabs a must - would go the volvo ones next time - so small and practical.
Awesome boat for whatever you want to do. I'll try and put some photos up so you can maybe get some ideas.
Cheers,
Disco.
EDIT - Will start another thread for the photos
