Other Hobbies

Lol , this is just a chance for me to have a brag non fish related. Ive been playing harmonica for quite a few years now and about 5 yrs ago joined the SW Blues Club for a laugh. Well last year i got asked to play in a band, never done it before ,never dreamed of doing it actually. So after much practice a few birthday parties, a few pub gigs etc . Our band Smokin Joe has been asked to play a set at this years Bridgetown Blues Fest , pretty stoked and just a bit nervous , but hey bring it on.

Anyone out in Fishwrecked world in a band or have performed on stage , what do you play , how long have you played etc. Its a great feeling and probably the reason i havent been out fishing as much in the last 12 to 18 months lol.

 Mate that is one instrument

Mate that is one instrument I've always loved and wanted to play. Hat's off to ya for doing the hard yards. Might talk to the missus in heading down there, she and I both love blues and bluegrass especially.

This is my baby an ESP LTD

Wed, 2021-09-29 14:13

This is my baby an ESP LTD EC-1000.

I played a little bit when I was 16 but sold my guitar, a sunburst Ibanez Les Paul copy to go to schoolies for $200 and they now fetch about $1,600. Safe to say Dad never forgave me.

I have a hand me down that I tinkered with irregularly and decided as my 40th birthday approached in May last year that I would pick it back up again. I had my eye on the EC-1000 but we were in Covid lockdowns with job insecurity and went with the $1,200 cheaper Ibanez RG421 and eventually upgraded to the EC-1000 back in April when I was playing it a fair bit and upgraded the pickups to the EMG Het Set. When I get back from Jurien I am going to have the nut upgraded to a bone nut and have the frets levelled and polished.

I went for lessons for about 9 months but his style of teaching (all over the shop) didn’t gel with my style of learning (linear progression) so I parted ways and have just been learning a few songs myself along the way. I have no finger finesse, no coordination, play with hard hands and struggle to get my head around the different timing sigs outside of 4-4 but I absolutely love picking it up and playing through a few Metallica riffs and some clean open chord stuff for my own intrinsic enjoyment.

The Mrs thinks I am getting quite good but I think I progressed a certain amount quite quickly that sounds ok to others but have plateaued hardcore and need to practice more with specific exercises rather than just chugging away at power chords to get to another level.

Looks good, I like the esp's.

I also like power chords, I've been thrashing them for nearly 30 years and I'm still no good!

Good work willo.

Love the harp

Thu, 2021-09-30 07:28

Matt Taylor is the man, seen him many times both solo and with Chain, Western Flyer is worth checking out as well.

Something that always blows me away is guys like Neil Young who can sing, play the harp and guitar or piano at the same time, thats something else.

Might truck on down to Bridgy and check out Smokin Joe

Cool , thanks fellas . We have a face book page Smokin Joe that has just been set up, i think there may be a few clips of the band playing a Sunday session. Not great recording but you will get the gist of it. Hey Jack and Pirate , we need a drummer and a singer and we will have a Fishwrecked band lol.

Matt Taylor is great but trying to follow his harping is not easy , i stick to old school 12 bar most of the time , but am having to up the performance a bit with  the band  wanting to cover bands like Clutch and Temperance society etc. Its a steep learning curve but being in the band pushes you out of your comfort zone , no other way to learn. Look us up on FB we are just getting started . Pardon the plug but we do Weddings ,Parties, Anything lol , another great band.

Cheers

Fellas.

I vaguely recall the band I was in (boredumb)playing a show with secret army back in the day. Played in bands for most of my life but stopped when fishing took over my life!
