Our trip out on 8/3/09

On sunday it was our club day which meant 6 am on the water and a 4:30 wake up call. When we launched the boat it was still pitch black so it was all lights on and a slow but steady pace out our first stop. by 6:60 the light was starting to come through so it made it a bit easier to spot the cray pots.

Our first stop was in 30 mtrs after a few sand whiting ,first few fish on board were a few scad and a few slimeys (great fresh bait)then we finally got a few whiting to 25cm.That was it we headed out to a deeper spot where we have caught a few bits and pieces before but today no such luck apart from a few nibbles nothing. In search of some fish we decided to move off , but before we could Nathan hooked something huge using the head amd body of a slimy after i had removed the fillets for bait on other rods

This fish took off on a blistering run taking about 50mtrs of line first up ,gaining a bit back after a small tweek of the drag the fish took off again but this time not as much , slowly wearing the fish out (not to mention Nathan) he was now gaining line back . after a few suggestions at what this might be and a 20 minuit battle it finally came into sight

yes it was a decent sambo , being carefull not to lose it at the boat we had the net at hand , but this one was just a bit big so we managed to get head in the net and with a free hand grabbing the tail it was on board , high 5s all round it was time for a pic of the catch

Nathans face says it all but he was exhausted and retired for the day

Not much else was caught for the day after searching many different areas all we managed was me with a average flatty and Sandy with a 4 1/2 kg Queenie.

Total catch for the day with 3 of us was 4 scad 4 slimeys 1 big sweep 1 flatty 4 whiting and of cause 1 sambo, but we released 2 B/Ass just under size , 1 Red just under and 3 small flattys

Nice Sambo.   Where were you guys fishing?  I was out back of G.I. in 50 metres  2 weekends ago with nothing decent & then moved back into 21 metres & caught some decent Skippy, Harlies & BAs.  Still haven't caught a legal snapper yet but going to give it a shot out wide tomorrow.  Cheers Ben

forgot to mention , when you fillet your fresh fish for bait dont throw the head and body overboard  throw it on the hooks and let it sink to the bottom , it works for Nathan anyway. all i get is pickers and left with an empty hook or a skeletonLaughing
