Best bet for Tailor (IME) is
Best bet for Tailor (IME) is one hour before through to one hour after sunset. North Mole is usually good for one or two fish or you can scout out the beaches to find bits of reef or holes within casting distance that are getting some waves breaking over them. Twistys & poppers work best for me when I throw lures around but I favour casting unweighted mulies or herring with the tails cut off & retrieving them slowly. You might try running a live herring or tailor fillet out from the North Mole if you have gear heavy enough to cope with a mulloway. If you have a small spin outfit you can cast smaller Twistys around in the river if you don't mind catching herring & chopper tailor. Casting hardbodys around the flats in the lower reaches of the river can produce a few nice flathead. I picked up about a dozen over the weekend down between Stirling Bridge & the Old Traffic Bridge. Don't use soft plastics in the lower reaches of the river as the hoardes of blowies will chew them up before anything decent gets a loot at them. The Old Traffic Bridge is usually a pretty reliable spot for some Tarwhine. Soft plastics & hardbodys can work well further up the river (upstream of the city) for Black Bream. You can always choose to soak a bait for the bream as well. Just get in close to structure & you shouldn't have too much trouble finding the bream. An early morning start is the go for the bream I find. My best fish always come within an hour either side of sunrise. Hillaries Boat Harbour is mostly a bread & butter fish area but some decent tailor are taken there regularly & casting from the western wall can produce mulloway & sharks later at night. For most species the best fishing is done at night so it might pay to start fishing an hour before sunset through until as late as you like. Decent fish do show up during the day but by far there are more & better fish in the later hours & you don't have to worry about the blowies.
I'm going out to soak some bait for bream in the next day or two from shore in the bayswater to guildford area. You would be welcome to tag along if it interests you. PM me for details if it does.
