Outboard not turning off (intermittent prob)
Submitted by ctan1968 on Sun, 2014-02-16 12:52
Hi all,
I,ve just noticed this lately that when I turn the key off, the outboard still runs for another few seconds before going off. This is only intermittent as most times it will switch off straight away the way its meant to.
All OK with starting.
Yamaha 100HP 4 stroke 2006.
Thank you

Not sure with outboards, but
Not sure with outboards, but on the older cars that was usually a timing fault..

Not usually common in fuel
Not usually common in fuel injected models, but may have a slight leak on injectors causing whats called dieseling, where the engine can run without a spark but draw in fuel to continue running.

Pretty unusual with an EFI
Pretty unusual with an EFI outboard as both fuel and spark should stop immediately? Possibly your key?
Try an experiment-instead of switching off with the key, pull out the stop lanyard and see if it does the same thing or not?
If it stops instantly as it should then your key may have a bit of salt/corrosion in it and not breaking the connection instantly.
In the older carby engines it was often due to a bit of glowing carbon and seeing as the carby keeps pushing fuel in as long as the engine sucks-it runs on.
Not sure if its possible with a modern EFI engine from that source?
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

Firstly ... Is it carb of EFI right on the change over about that time
does it run/idle normally when u turn the key off & for how long?
have you had it serviced or looked at recently or done any repairs mods ?
is it still running & starting as normal or has that changed as we'll?
