Outboard Stolen
Submitted by Dale on Sun, 2016-10-30 13:44
My boat was parked up in secure ( and I use that word loosely ) storage and some prick has relieved my dinghy of its outboard, sometime between last Thursday and today. Done a report with the police but don't expect I'll see it again. Will talk to the people at the storage place tomorrow to see if something shows up on their security. Nothing is sacred.

WTF!
Sorry to hear that, Dale. You've put a lot of effort into that dinghy and a scum pinches your outboard! Does the "secure storage place" have insurance to cover theft of stored items?

Hi Andy, hadn't gotten around to insuring it, had 2 cars to do first. I'll see what the storage mob have to offer, but I'm not holding my breath.

That hurts thieving
That hurts thieving mongrels, I want to be wrong .. but I’m thinking the facility isn’t obliged to to have insurance cover for theft of stored goods , but they would be obliged to have working security in place such as locks ,fences , alarms , lighting and video surveillance to avoid that liability . Should be in the nitty gritty of whatever was signed and wonder if the cops will send forensics or just file it . Let us know how you get on , hopefully you get a bit of luck with it

Hi Chris, yeah as I said, I'm not holding my breath. Looks like a trip to the local yammy dealer this week. I will just have to keep it here, but that means kicking the cars out of the garage.

Its harder to steal a car motor than a dinghy motor, Dale!

Would have to be video footage - surely
not that its of value all the time. Is the fence able to be climbed easily? Fair chance key was used to access. Hope you get a good result, the right result out of this. There is no end to the numbers of scum around.

Yeah, could have easily been someone who had a password, or number to get in, anyone could have done that from inside. Pricks even cut the wires from the transducer when they cut the wires from the motor to recharge the battery, so I'm up for one of those as well. Could probably rejoin them, but don't know how that would go giving the sounder some static.

Junction box
Use a junction box or terminal strip. Include the shield being rejoined as well and you'll be fine. If using something that isn't waterproof then use liquid heat shrink to cover the whole lot once you verify it is working.

Hi Mike, yeah, I really must have run over a chinaman. I've past over all the series numbers and the DNA number to the police, so hopefully it gets found somehow. Going to go out out buy a new motor this week, I see Sports Marine have them for a good price just now.

Well I've done some looking around for a new one, wanted to go like for like, but don't look like the 30hp 3cyl version is available anymore. Can get the CV 30 for $2750, but it looks like they have oiling up issues at slow speeds. Be a bastard crabbing.

Sorry to hear about your outboard, I have a cv 30, if idling or low speeds it becomes sluggish for a bit, I think this is the oiling up you are referring too, when I go crabbing I run 2 strings of 5 nets about 500m apart, allows me to open her up between strings, over all pretty surprised at the economy, have done a 80 km run at WOT, 24 knots for 30l of fuel
ps, this is on a 4.2m

As much as I love my yami don't discount the Suzuki 2 stroke range. A mate has a 30 on his 4.2 mtre tinny and goes very well. Hope the storage have vid footage as that sucks.

Although the 3 cyl are bit heavier I really think they are a good step above the cv's. Much smoother.

25DMHL
Hey Dale,
I wish we could still do a 30DMHL for you, we have plenty of the 30 CV motors when used correctly don't oil up at low speeds / idling.
We do also have one of the last 25NMHL available on the market, these are the premium version of the range similar to your previous 30DMHL and will idle and pot around all day
Cheers,

Loaded this incident onto the Stolen Boats Perth FB page today, hopefully that helps to achieve a positive outcome. So if the person responsible reads this or that, it's going to come back to bite you. Keep your eye on the birdie!!

That is bullshit, what a bunch of kents. The quicker the coppers can identify the culprit the more chance you have of a positive result before you have to fork out for a new outboard.
You'd think they'd be jumping out of their skin to get you a positive result. That's unless of course they have something to hide...

Was actually thinking the same myself ^
cant see why they'd need a couple of days - but then, I dont run the business. Is it a coincidence that that particular outboard is not built anymore?

Update: Storage mob saw nothing on their security cameras, cameras struggle to see down to where dinghy was at night due to glare from street lights, so there are no clues.

Maybe ask them if you can
Maybe ask them if you can view it yourself?
A bored 200kg security bloke yawning and playing on Farcebook while glancing at the footage won't see jackshit
Especially if it was the same bloke who shoulda seen the thieves while they were in action.

What are the terms and conditions of storage
Some are pretty restrictive but still worth a look and why do they say it happened at night ? Must have seen something !

Too true, they mentioned how many vehicles went down that end but he reckons they weren't there long. In saying that, how long do you need? With the right tools, I would have that motor off in 5 minutes max.

So they provide Police with
So they provide Police with every single number plate and let them cross reference those plate with their intelligence. I've done a fair bit of work with the WAPOL traffic intel guys and their analytical systems are amazing in how they can bring every bit of intelligence they have together and sting them on an unrelated matter.
This is absolute bullshit, don't give up mate and get the Police down there demanding the footage. If you lob up at the local station and demand to speak to the Snr Sgt you'll get more traction.

Rego
Hi Dale,
If they couldn't see your boat clearly where it was, could they at least see the Rego numbers of the cars that went that way?
Surely they would have seen something if the vehicles had to enter the site.

I have the opinion that
My opinion of some of the large boat storage businesses are that they are like the kmart for boat part thieves.
The security is non existent and those so inclined can just wonder in, case the goodies on offer come back at another time and do their shopping.
