Overhead reel information

Hi guys and girls.
I am gradually building up my tackle collection after years of neglect. Thanks to the great info fishwrecked members have provided, I have pulled together a collection of spinning reels to cover most situations.
Now I am wondering if I could get some advice on what would be the best overhead for casting from the shore, and also handle the very occassional offshore opportunity. My old Shimano was a great servant, but after 25 years it just can't get the baits out there anymore.
I am looking for an overhead that is tough enough to handle the bigger fish, and can cast live baits, poppers, metal lures etc right out there.
I have been looking at the new Shimano catalogue and there are some really nice reels there.
But happy to hear recommendations on all makes and models

All information will be greatly received. Have a pretty reasonable budget.

Many Thanks Colin Hay

Yeah it will be for landbased fishing. Planning to head up to Kalbarri in the new year. I would also like somehting that I could use offshore on the very rare occassions I have a chance to get out on a boat.
Thanks for the info. I will check out the Saltiga now, Colin

Have used it once with a beach rod and it casts a mile.  Use it bottom fishing all the time in up to 90m and have pulled in some decent size fish (sambo's 20+kg's) no problems, and it is lightweight.

Cost me $550

There's certainly heaps to choose from nowadays. To help you narrow it down.... how much you want to spend and how heavy a line you want to run??

Hi Honshu

Wed, 2007-12-05 07:26

Hi Honshu Up to about $600. Will be fishing 10 kg. How do you rate the Calcutta B adn TE's I would also be looking to find a rod to match with it, so if you can come up with a suggestion that would also be appreciated. The rod will be used for spinning from the rocks mainly.
Thanks for the help, it is appreciated
Colin

Many thanks for the information Andrew, Dean, Italiano and Honshu. The Saltist looks a pretty fine reel and a bloody good price. What sort of rods have you guys matched them up to.

All the best Colin

My 975csld is matched

Wed, 2007-12-05 08:17

My 975csld is matched to:

Boat rod:  Penn Power Stick Pro 1155HG, 15kg, can't really help you in the Landbased rod area as I don't know much.

Saltist reels are great, and hard to knock for the money IMO, If you choose any of the above mentioned you will be happy.

Not sure I want to go with the digital control. Always be worried about taking something like that on the sand and rocks.

The 525  Mag are good

Wed, 2007-12-05 15:55

The 525  Mag are good reels, they won 3 of the world surfcasting championships with that reel, so it casts good.  Has a fast retrieve at 6:1 which is a fast retrieve.

There is a Penn 525 Super Mag available which has better bearings and 2 more magnets so casting is better controlled (slower and faster).

But If i was spending upto $600, I'd be looking at more expensive reels, which come with better parts... IMO

I did a bit more research on the Mag 525s and a few of US surf web sites provided mixed reviews of the super mags. Reckoned the normal mags were better.

Still tossing up whether to go Shimano (I do love Shimano's) or Diawa, or possibly Penn.
Like the sound of the Crystal Blue Andrew. I was looking at one the other day.
Thanks again for the info.
Colin
