This may be a silly question but can I put an overhead reel on a spinning rod?, or do I need a proper over head surf rod

Hey Ben89,

Either

Most modern rods can bend either way so I would worry too much, i was told that by a rod builder.
The guides on spin rods are positioned differently also

get an overhead. all rods have a back bone which alows it to bend one way properly so it isnt smart using the rod for a difrent style because isnt ment to bend that way and so snapping is alot easier to happen

Go for an rod that is set for an overhead.

A few years back I broke my fav old glass stick by switching it to an overhead reel use. Was only setting it up for a few fishing trips onto the Sambos and was setting up an old penn senator onit. I was setting the drag and next moment, bang. My trusty j/walker was dead. I had used an alvey set up on 50lb for years with out problems. Still can't find a rod I like with my alvey. Additionally the overhead rods will have 2 or 3 more guides on them so the line doesn't touch the bland when bending.

i think the rod is probably under a lot more pressure casting a big lead and bait, than pulling a fish in, even when the drag is wound up,think its more to do with the rod twisting if the spine is in the wrong place.plus line touching the rod with spin spaceing.

cheers Sid

One of the better overhead

One of the better overhead cast reels is the Daiwa Sealine SL50HB.

works very well for trolling and bottom bouncing as well.

Do a search on Youtube and be amazed what these guys achieve with this sort of gear.

But a "normal" eggbeater will do a fine job as well, just a little bit of training and technick.

There is a surfcasting and fishing club operating here in Perth with a monthly meet/cast in Morley area who are very friendly and helpfull.
